The School of Art, ArtHistory and Design invitesapplications fora full-time, non-tenure track, open-rank instructional track faculty position inCeramics beginning with the 2025-26academic year. Thesuccessful candidate willteach and mentor undergraduate students in B.A. and B.F.A programs.

We seek a dynamic artist-educator to contribute to our vibrant and historic ceramics community who will work in tandem with internationally recognized faculty and staff to advance contemporary ceramics education and pedagogy in one of the finest academic ceramic facilities world-wide.

The successful candidate shall be able to teach at all levels of the ceramics curriculum including undergraduate and graduate level courses.They will have an established record of excellence in the ceramics field consistent with the expectations of a top tier program (national shows, gallery relationships, NCECA recognition and awards, residencies at premier locations).

We are looking for someone who will further develop Ceramics III: Surface Design, a course focused on 3D application of 2D surface techniques on the ceramic surface. Ideally the person will have a practice at the intersection of drawing and ceramics, and can mentor students in this course and beyond.Along with Ceramics III the person will teach Ceramics II: Throwing. The successful candidate will have a record of excellence and achievement working on the potters wheel, and the ability to teach and further conceptualize Ceramics II, as evidenced by a body of artwork that incorporates wheel thrown vessel forms. They will have the ability to assist faculty with the conceptualization of needed additional subject matter in the curriculum to be featured in the Advanced Concepts in Ceramics course, such as conceptual development and professional practice.

The successful applicant will teach three classes per semester, advise BFA majors and honors students, participate in departmental service, and assist with recruiting students by being a visible advocate for excellence in Ceramics at The University of Iowa. We seek a colleague who will enhance our community in meaningful ways, and assist with bringing our program to national ranking and excellence.

Education Requirement:


  • MFA inceramicsor equivalent in hand by start date.

  • A record of excellence and achievement working on the potters wheel.


Desirable Qualifications:


  • Three years of teaching experience beyond graduate school
  • Experience teaching and mentoring students
  • Experience with academic committees and departmental service
