Surgical First Assistant - Full-Time Days

Inova Mount Vernon Hospital is looking for a dedicated Surgical First Assistant to join the team. This role will be Full Time: 8 week orientation 730am-1600pm, after orientation: 5 8hour shifts or 4 10 hour shifts (730-1800), On call during the week and weekend. On call required.

Job Responsibilities



  • Ensures improvements in practice settings by assuming responsibility for self-development in life-long learning.
  • Provides direction and guidance to others regarding practice, serves as a resource preceptor, and mentor.
  • Advocates patient rights from the patient/family perspective: acts as a resource to resolve issues. Seeks validation of clinical decisions from others for complex patients or unfamiliar situations.
  • Provides safe therapeutic care by collaboration with surgeons and health care team in performing a safe operation with optimal outcomes for the patient.
  • Utilizes standards, guidelines and pathways for care delivery.
  • Incorporates data and information to continuously improve care and practice to enhance outcomes.
  • Uses an integrated approach toward patient outcomes.
  • May perform additional duties as assigned.


Additional Requirements:



  • Working Hours: 8 week orientation 730am-1600pm, after orientation: 5 8hour shifts or 4 10 hour shifts (730-1800), On call during the week and weekend
  • Minimum Education: Completion of Surgical First Assistant program through an accredited organization; or Medical school graduate with surgical training; or completion of a surgical assistant training program during military service in the United States. Preferred: AAS in Surgical Assisting or Surgical Technologist
  • Years of Experience: Minimum of 1 year of experience as a Surgical First Assistant; or 2 years of Surgical Technologist experience
  • Certification: Basic Life Support-American Heart Association

    • Preferred: National Surgical Assistant Certification issued by the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA), or the National Commission for Certification of Surgical Assistants (NCCSA)

  • License: Must meet licensure criteria and be licensed as Surgical Assistant in the Commonwealth of Virginia at time of hire.
