This position is part of the Space Systems Development (SSD) business unit. SSD develops next-generation concepts and systems to advance our future of living and working in space sustainably.

As part of a small team of diverse engineers with unique backgrounds, you will develop System Safety Engineering processes and products for the design of space station modules and supporting systems. You must have a passion for human spaceflight and astronaut safety, and a capacity to work collaboratively or independently on sophisticated and exciting new problems.

As a System Safety Engineer at Blue Origin, you will work with systems engineering teams to generate and verify compliance with safety and reliability requirements. You will help engineers identify areas of opportunity for design improvements, minimize risk to people and property, and increase the probability of mission success. Responsibilities:

  • Develop Preliminary Hazard Analyses (PHA), Functional Hazard Assessments (FHA), Failure Modes, Effects and Criticality Analyses (FMECA), Fault Tree Analysis (FTA), Hazard Reports, and developing mitigation plans.
  • Support engineering teams in identifying areas of opportunity for design improvements with the intent to minimize risk to people and property and increase the probability of mission success.
  • Participate in gated reviews to communicate safety analyses.
  • Apply a variety of System Safety technical principles and tools in Systems Engineering that contributes safety-centric improvements to activities such as ConOps development, requirements analysis, and interface definition.
  • Ensure traceability between system and subsystem functions, requirements, and safety artifacts.
  • Train and coach engineers on identifying and analyzing system safety risks
  • Work with systems engineering and subsystem cognizant engineers to identify and verify compliance with system safety requirements.
  • Assist in generating metrics and report on program system safety status.
  • Implement and maintain system safety processes and identify continuous improvement opportunities.
  • Participate in actively maintaining a healthy system safety culture.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Minimum of a B.S. degree in aerospace engineering or related field with 5+ years of experience in aerospace and/or aviation manufacturing.
  • Experience with performing safety analyses including different types of Hazard Analyses, FMECA, Fault Tree Analysis, and Hazard Reports.
  • Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, fluid schematics, and electrical circuit diagrams.
  • Strong safety and mission assurance fundamentals.
  • Demonstrated ability to generate metrics and report on program system safety status.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team on rapid development programs.
  • Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal skills, and ability to communicate technical information to non-technical partners both internally and externally.
  • Ability to earn trust, maintain positive and professional relationships, and strengthen our culture of inclusion.
  • Must be a U.S. citizen or national, U.S. permanent resident (current Green Card holder), or lawfully admitted into the U.S. as a refugee or granted asylum.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience performing system safety and reliability analyses on launch vehicles and/or satellites and/or human-rated in-space systems and/or space stations.
  • Experience performing compliance assessment of system safety processes and products against external standards including Range Safety (e.g. 91-710, etc.), NASA (NASA System Safety Handbook, 8000 series such as NASA-HDBK-8715.26, etc.), FAA (ARP-4761, ARP-4754, etc.), Military (MIL-STD-882, MIL-STD-1629A, MIL-HDBK-217F, etc.)
  • Experience with certification of human-rated space systems.
  • Experience with systems engineering modeling tools and relational tools, such as Cameo, JAMA, DNG/DOORS.

Compensation Range for:

CA applicants is $120,060.00-$168,084.00;CO applicants is $110,055.00-$154,077.00;WA applicants is $120,060.00-$168,084.00
