The Colorado Mental Health Hospital in Ft Logan has an opening for a full-time Faculty (unclassified) Lead Physician position in the Department of Psychiatry.




Job Summary:



The Colorado Mental Health Hospital in Fort Logan (CMHHIFL) is one of two state psychiatric hospitals serving Colorado residents with acute mental illnesses and/or court-ordered inpatient restoration treatment. Our vision is to provide exemplary inpatient psychiatric care to residents in Colorado with acute, serious and persistent mental health needs. CMHHIFL provides inpatient treatment to adult clients generally between the ages of 18 and 59. The hospital has 94 civil adult inpatient beds and 22 forensic beds.

CMHHIFL is located in the greater Denver area. This position will be required to be in person on the Ft Logan campus and is not located on Anschutz Medical Campus.

This position is considered open rank based on number of hours worked.

Key Responsibilities:



  • Recruits, orients and supervises primary and specialty providers, contracted On-Duty physicians, and ancillary staff.
  • Supervises, evaluates, coaches and develops medical, ancillary and administrative staff. Manages performance to include disciplinary proceedings as needed and/or as assigned. Handles daily supervisory issues for physicians and state classified staff such as approval of leave, guidance and mentoring, and oversight of work. Assigns tasks, monitors progress, establishes work standards, and monitors the quality of work.
  • Develops and revises hospital policies and procedures and clinical care guidelines/protocols. Ensures compliance with regulatory standards (e.g., TJC, CMS). Reviews death and sentinel events.
  • Monitors hospital admission referrals for medical appropriateness. Provides second-level review of problematic cases and serves as a resource for other directors and facility leadership.
  • Manages the Institute's outside medical process through clinical review and authorization of services. Assesses and recommends off-site sources for needed patient care, treatment, and services not provided by the department or the hospital. Coordinates care for difficult cases. Brokers consensus when differences of opinion arise.
  • Addresses, investigates and resolves complaints from hospital staff, patients, or external stakeholders.
  • Chairs and/or serves on multiple committees to assist the hospital in meeting its mission and goals.
  • Maintains active clinical staff privileges and current medical license.
  • Complies with CDHS and State of Colorado policies and procedures, Medical Staff Bylaws, Medical Staff Rules & Regulations, and Medical Staff Practice Protocols
  • Performs related work as assigned, such as those duties outlined in the Staff Physician job description. Provides site coverage for "Code-Blue" emergency response and stabilization of medical emergencies. Provides after-hours medical back-up "MOD" on call as assigned and also after-hours/weekend OD site coverage as needed.
  • Balances resources across departments. Advocates for and secures necessary equipment. Completes operational assessments, analyses and develops proposals for service expansion to further the mission of the agency.

  • Develops, maintains, revises and reports on Peer Review processes and performance measures.
  • Supervises the On-Duty physicians, including ongoing evaluation of their clinical care and documentation and timely feedback.
  • Provides oversight of other clinical services such as dental clinic, laboratory and phlebotomy service, including contracted services and others, as assigned
  • Coordinates the hospital's pandemic response and mitigation efforts through policy development, guidance, training, and public health compliance with assistance from Medical Physicians, the facility infection preventionist and medical clinic staff.
  • Ensures radiology service complies with applicable rules and regulations; may include serving as the hospital's radiation safety officer.

Qualifications:



Minimum Qualifications:
Required: Applicants must meet minimum qualifications at the time of hire. The ranks are based on how many years a candidate has been licensed and if they want to pursue the promotions track.



  • MD or DO Family Practice / Internal Medicine or other related specialty.
  • Graduation from an accredited School of Medicine. Must be licensed to practice Medicine in the State of Colorado


Preferred Qualifications:



  • Experience working in inpatient settings

The starting salary range (or hiring range) for this position has been established as HIRING RANGE:

$299,970 - $305,910
