About the Job

The Minnesota Alcohol and Pain Lab (MAPL) in the Department of Anesthesiology has an opening for a full-time Postdoctoral Associate. In addition to developing their own research interests related to the lab's focus on pain/substance use interactions, this individual will contribute to the analysis and publication of existing data and the design and implementation of new projects and grant proposals. MAPL resources are available to support professional development activities, including conference attendance and pilot projects. The mission of the MAPL is to advance understanding of the association between pain and the use of alcohol and other substances. We aim to generate new insights and treatments that will improve quality of life for people with pain and those at risk for alcohol-related harms. Our research also addresses non- pharmacologic treatments for chronic pain, placebo mechanisms, pain- and substance-related clinical decision making, and development of novel technologies for the assessment of alcohol use. Individuals with an interest in any of these areas are encouraged to apply.

Responsibilities:
* Participate in the design, implementation, and evaluation of research studies regarding pain and/or substance use (30%)
* Author, co-author, or otherwise collaborate on scientific publications and presentations (30%)
* Develop research ideas, projects, and study protocols (20%)
* Coordinate and oversee study recruitment, scheduling study sessions, human research participants payments, and related issues (5%)
* Oversee preparation and submission of Institutional Review Board (IRB) protocols, revisions, continuing reviews, etc. (5%)
* Participate in career training/development programs. (5%)
* Mentor undergraduate and graduate students on research projects. (5%)

This individual is also expected to apply for extramural funding by means of post-doctoral fellowships and awards.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:
* PhD in Neuroscience, Psychology, or a related field OR a relevant clinical doctorate (e.g., MD, DO, DDS, DMD)
* Evidence of strong scientific productivity, including peer-reviewed publications
* Excellent written and oral communication skills
* Team player, willing to help and collaborate on other projects

Preferred Qualifications:
* Experience with laboratory-based human participants research regarding pain assessment or substance use
* Experience with structural and/or functional neuroimaging
* Experience writing competitive funding applications and grant proposals
* Experience and familiarity with scientific and statistical software for data acquisition and analysis (e.g. MATLAB, Python, R).

Pay and Benefits

Pay Range: $61,008 - $74,088; depending on education/qualifications/experience
