The Massachusetts Medical Society (MMS) is the statewide professional association for physicians and medical students, supporting 25,000 members. The Manager, Editorial Operations supports the Director of Editorial Systems and Director of Editorial Publishing Operations in managing workflow and production schedules across the Editorial Office. This role leads, guides, and develops members of the Editorial Operations team while overseeing a range of managerial and administrative responsibilities essential to the effective and efficient operation of the editorial offices. The Manager evaluates and improves workflows, identifies opportunities for greater efficiency, and helps ensure that editorial operations and production schedules are consistently maintained.


Responsibilities:




  1. Serves as direct manager to junior staff within Editorial Operations department and directs their day-to-day work while providing feedback/oversight.

  2. Regularly meets with staff and maintains availability for employees where needed. Assists junior staff by brainstorming solutions to various issues and aids in workload prioritization.

  3. Identifies, guides, and fosters new skillsets for the junior staff.

  4. Participates in hiring and onboarding process for new roles within the Editorial Operations group.

  5. Leads at least one sub-team or critical task, including but not limited to Trial Registration, Accepts, Letters to the Editor, Preflight, VCMs, IMCs, Perspectives Coordination, etc.

  6. Working member on the Accepts sub-team, coordinating with NEJM Production departments to ensure that accepted manuscripts are passed through in clean, workable fashion.

  7. In conjunction with Directors, works to continue developing workflows and responsibilities that are shared across multiple roles in the department to create better distribution of workflow, sharing of expertise, and a more resilient department.

  8. Participates in higher-level planning and strategy work with Directors and other manager roles within department.





  1. Works with NEJM Editorial to understand needs of editors, statisticians, and other stakeholders to better guide Editorial Operations group in their work.




  1. Creates and maintains detailed training/resource guides to better document existing Editorial Operations workflow.

  2. Provides support to editors and/or sections of the Journal as needed, such as engaging in Editorial Coordinator-level work and/or joining various sub-teams.

  3. Assumes selected duties and responsibilities of the Director of Editorial Systems in Director's absence.




  1. Takes on other projects within the department as needed.




  1. Performs other related duties as assigned.


Qualifications:


* A Bachelor's degree and 5+ years of academic publishing experience are required.


* Previous supervisory experience is preferred.


* Must have strong interpersonal as well as oral and written communications skills.


* A knowledge of computer software systems, especially ScholarOne, is essential.


* Must possess a high degree of intelligence, maturity, poise, sensitivity, and discretion as well as the ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines.


Compensation:


The target base pay for this role is $70,000+. Salary is commensurate with skills, qualifications, and experience.
