Job Summary

his will be a working Supervisor role. Primary Role is to directly supervise the nurse case managers who provide utilization management decisions on UC Davis Health capitated members. The RN Supervisor is also expected to support the team in conducting case reviews as needed.

Minimum Qualifications - For full consideration, applicants are encouraged to upload license and/or certification if required of the position

  • Valid California Registered Nurse License without restriction
  • Bachelor's degree in Nursing or other healthcare profession, or a combination of comparable clinical education and / or experience.
  • Supervisory and/or leadership experience with overseeing team and managing complex workflows and multiple priorities.
  • Experience in using understanding of disease processes to identify and analyze care/service needs for managed care patients.
  • At least 2 years of leadership experience in Utilization Management (UM) or Case Management (CM) in a Health Insurance, Health System, IPA or Provider Group with Delegated function from the Health Plan, and/or Acute Hospital Settings.
  • Regulatory Compliance Experience in the Utilization Management Space (Federal, State of California, DMHC, DHCS).
  • Strong knowledge of case management, utilization review, discharge planning, home care and/or managed care.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively supervise a team and to manage complex workflows and multiple priorities.
  • Skills to perform in-depth chart analysis to provide accurate information in a concise, informative manner and to identify/analyze problems or issues related to utilization management.
  • Extensive, broad-based nursing clinical experience including knowledge of care/services provided in differing levels of care, i.e., ambulatory and institutional settings.
  • Ability to assess lab data, medications, and specific disease management needs.
  • Possess clinical skills and knowledge base to assess type and amount of home health care necessary to meet patient's needs on discharge.
  • Knowledge of HMO systems, procedures and regulations regarding benefits, services and restrictions in relation to both utilization management and continuity of care/case management.
  • Analytical skills to identify and obtain pertinent data from multiple sources, accord each piece of information the appropriate weight and consideration, and reach the appropriate logical conclusions/recommendations.
  • Ability to make independent judgments based on clinical knowledge and nursing experience required in planning for short, immediate, and long-term goals and objectives.
  • Ability to work with all levels of staff, both inter- and intradepartmental to create a cooperative relationship and positive work environment.
  • Effective time management skills to accommodate special projects, deadlines, and priorities.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to train and mentor subordinate staff, convey complex clinical and technical information in a clear and concise manner, and prepare and present a wide variety of reports, documentation, analyses, and project proposals.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Certified Case Manager or other Magnet Recognized Certification in Case Management or Utilization
  • Master's degree preferred
  • Knowledge of legal implications of practice.
  • Strong analytical and critical thinking skills, with the ability to quickly analyze problems, determine appropriate levels of intervention, and develop and apply effective solutions.
  • Knowledge of applicable business software and specialized applications and data management systems.

Department Overview

The department interacts daily with all levels of staff in the ambulatory clinics, both hospital-based and primary care network sites, the Patient Relations and Physician Referral Center staff, multiple community providers and care partners with UC Davis Medical Group and most importantly, members enrolled in the Managed Care HMO Health Plans. The Utilization Management (UM) unit of the department insures services/care rendered to UCDMG capitated members are medically necessary/appropriate and in conformance clinically with the benefits of the member's Health Plan.

Work Environment
