| Position Summary |
The Senior Director of Environmental Safety reports to the Associate Vice President for Environmental Safety, Risk, and Resiliency and provides strategic direction, leadership, and operational management for UGA's Environmental Affairs, Industrial Hygiene and Occupational Safety, and Hazardous Waste Management programs. The Senior Director works to ensure a safe and healthy environment for faculty, staff, students, and visitors, complying with all applicable regulatory requirements.
The Senior Director is an advanced Environmental Health and Safety position within the Risk and Resiliency Division. This position is responsible for directing, coordinating, and evaluating the operations of the safety and compliance programs serving and supporting the University community, which includes the sub-disciplines of the Hazardous Waste Management Program, Industrial Hygiene and Occupational Safety, and Environmental Affairs. The position reports directly to the Associate Vice President for Environmental Safety, Risk, and Resiliency.
The Senior Director is a member of the Division's senior management team through which they participate and collaborate with other team members to develop and implement strategic, financial, personnel, operational, and other decisions that facilitate the achievement of Division, F&A, and University goals. This position is responsible for maintaining continuous excellence in customer service for all environmental health and safety services and interactions. Additionally, the position requires administrative leadership, policy development, and engagement with the university community to promote a culture of safety. |
| Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and/or Competencies |
- Demonstrated knowledge of federal and state laws, regulations, standards, guidelines, and other related conventions on environmental, occupational health, and safety.
- Demonstrated ability to respond to urgent and critical situations appropriately in academic, research, and clinical settings.
- Ability to prepare clear, accurate, and informative reports containing findings, conclusions, and recommendations, along with superior oral presentation and other communications skills required.
- Use of the Internet for research purposes, and experience with computers (email, desktop software applications such as Office, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.) is required.
- Experience working in a university setting or related environmental health and safety experience.
- Outstanding human relations and leadership skills, and the ability to function in a team environment; able to work independently and without supervision, and on multiple simultaneous projects.

Operations Management
- Provide Director-level oversight for the daily operations of the Environmental Safety Program within the Risk and Resiliency Division, which includes the Hazardous Waste Management, Industrial Hygiene and Occupational Safety, and Environmental Affairs programs. General management duties include team building; professional development; planning; management of cross training; benchmarking performance indicators with peer and aspirational institutions; integrating sub-disciplines to improve efficiency; developing and maintaining policies, procedures, and guidance documents related to campus safety and compliance; and integrating of nationally recognized best practices into the environmental health and safety programs.
- Supervise the Environmental Safety Program Associate Directors responsible for the Hazardous Waste Management Program, Industrial Hygiene and Occupational Safety, and Environmental Affairs through the development and refinement of job descriptions, annual work plans, performance evaluations, qualitative and quantitative performance metrics, and by providing routine and periodic communication with regular progress reviews and annual performance appraisals.
- Promote professional development of staff and leadership and serve as the authority on work assignments and disciplinary decisions within the work unit.
- Direct short-range and long-range organizational goals, objectives, strategic plans, policies and operating procedures; monitor and evaluate effectiveness, and effect changes needed for improvement.
- Design and conduct studies, surveys, and /or other activities to assess the impact and success of the environmental safety programs and to establish priorities and initiatives to enhance safety and compliance.
- Plan, direct, and review the activities and operations of the environmental health and safety programs; provide leadership and supervise staff directly and through subordinate supervisors. Assess and identify appropriate resources and equipment necessary to fully support environmental health and safety objectives.
- Communicate with UGA faculty and administration as well as members of institutional safety committees as necessary to develop, review, update, and deliver safety and compliance support that meets the needs and expectations of the university community.
- Oversee the development and provision of safety and compliance training in existing programs and in emerging areas such as the Spill Prevention, Control and Countermeasures (SPCC) implementation/compliance, and Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) training.

- Analyze the work processes within the environmental health and safety programs and investigate possible improvements to the quality and/or efficiency of the work. Develop and implement program and division-wide best practices and policies.
- Work with Associate Directors to ensure excellent customer service. Counsel Associate Directors on issues related to policy/procedure, federal/state regulations, training, and any items related to the effective mission of the Risk and Resiliency Division.
- Work collaboratively and cooperatively with other incident response personnel from the Office of Research, UGA Police, and outside agencies, sometimes outside of normal business hours.
- Provide representation at campus meetings as a professional environmental health and safety resource and liaison for successful safety and compliance program development, planning, and implementation.
- Communicate and interact with the UGA community to promote and project the positive culture of the Risk and Resiliency Division.

- Work with the AVP and Business Manager on budget development.
- Represent the Risk and Resiliency Division when required for meetings, committees, events, etc. as appropriate to support the AVP.
