Position Summary
The Human Resources Manager, reporting to the Director of Active Learning, is an integral part of the Active Learning Student Engagement team. As part of its mission to support student success through scalable, high-impact peer education programs, this team develops, coordinates, and sustains large-scale active learning initiatives across the institution. This role serves as the centralized operational lead for high-volume student employment systems, designing, owning, and continuously improving scalable processes for hiring, onboarding, and payroll across multiple programs and funding sources, including peer learning assistants (PLAs), peer tutors, and other student and temporary employees supporting active learning initiatives.
The Human Resources Manager independently manages the full employee life cycle (recruitment through separation), policy and procedural guidance, employee benefits, payroll, employee training, and compensation for over 500 regular and temporary employees, with an emphasis on high-volume, semester-based student employment operations.
This position also manages broader HR functions for the Office of Instruction, overseeing day-to-day HR operations across both units. The HR Manager serves as the initiator and point of contact for all HR-related matters within the department-Active Learning and the Office of Instruction-as well as a liaison between these units, the Director of Academic Affairs, HR Operations and Compensation, and University Human Resources ( UHR) in HR related matters.

Department HR Management

  • Manage the creation, posting, and filling of all full-time, student, and part-time positions through the unit's human resources information systems.
  • Oversee the hiring of all positions within the department, managing search committees and applicant communication (offer letters, tuition waivers, and position funding), and semester-based student hiring and onboarding processes to ensure alignment with academic calendars and program timelines.
  • Oversee and execute classification changes, promotions, and HR actions for all full-time, student, and part-time positions within the relevant human resources information systems, including the administration of graduate assistantship waivers, offer letters, and work breaks.
  • Manage all separation activities for exiting employees, including conducting exit interviews.
  • Lead coordination with the HR Liaison for Active Learning and the Office of Instruction (engaging UHR as needed), managing collaboration on training, policy, and guidance related to well-being, retirement, workers' compensation, employee benefits, and FMLA.
  • Own and maintain detailed payroll records across employee types and funding sources, including split funding models.

Payroll Oversight

  • Serve as the primary authority and point of contact for faculty and staff supervisors and student employees across campus on payroll matters, including troubleshooting pay issues, funding splits, and appointment changes for student employees.
  • Review and reconcile all bi-weekly and monthly payroll for student, part-time, and regular employees.
  • Review and approve payroll for accuracy across all pay groups in Active Learning and the Office of Instruction while meeting established payroll deadlines.
  • Manage and execute adjustments or corrections of omissions, errors, or unusual items in advance of payroll run dates.
  • Prepare all ad hoc salary requests for the department for submission to the Director of Academic Affairs HR Operations and Compensation, including Requests for Salary Action (RSAs) and Supplements.

Administrative Duties

  • Maintain secure, confidential and current personnel files.
  • Work with supervisors and affected employees to disseminate relevant HR information, complete all required forms and submit paperwork by all applicable deadlines.
  • Coordinate and submit unit requested information by the set deadline.
  • Participate in the day-to-day operations of the Office of Active Learning
  • Perform additional duties as assigned by the Director of Active Learning.
  • Proactively identify opportunities to streamline departmental HR and payroll workflows, enhancing efficiency while reducing administrative burden for program staff.
