The City of Champaign Public Works Department is seeking a results and team-oriented individual with a broad general knowledge in multiple trades areas to keep the various City facilities and building systems in excellent condition as a Building Maintenance Worker II. Responsibilities of Position

              As the Building Services Maintenance Worker II, you will join a talented team that performs a variety of skilled and semi-skilled duties related to the repair and maintenance of City buildings, properties, and equipment and contractor coordination. Any day may include diagnosing facility problems; performing repair work in a variety of different craft areas, such as electrical, plumbing, locksmithing, lighting, carpentry, HVAC, drywall, and painting; operating heavy/small equipment and hand tools; and scheduling contractor repairs and services. You will use computers to diagnose and monitor building systems, review electronic schematics and blueprints, and complete work orders. Our Building Services Maintenance Workers provides excellent customer service at all times, including stressful or difficult situations, and must be available to respond to weather and other emergency situations that may require working up to 16-hour shifts with little notice.

 

Main    Maintenance Worker positions may be filled at the I or II level. Level II positions require the ability to operate Public Works equipment on a regular basis without supervision. Newly hired or current employees who are promoted, transferred, or voluntarily demoted to Maintenance Worker positions will be paid at the Maintenance Worker I level until successfully demonstrating equipment operation competency through proficiency testing or completion of the Public Works Department training program.

The starting salary is $28.81 - $31.16 per hour, with an excellent fringe benefits package.  Applications must be submitted online to champaignil.gov/jobs no later than Sunday, June 7, 2026.

Required Qualifications

  • High School diploma or equivalent. Completed coursework without a diploma or certificate will be considered.
  • Work experience in the maintenance and repair of facilities through the use of trades, such as electrical, plumbing, locksmithing, lighting, carpentry, HVAC, drywall, painting and building systems.
  • An equivalent combination of experience and training that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities will be considered.
  • Ability to use computers and mobile device as needed in the performance of assigned duties.
  • Excellent customer service and communication skills.
  • Ability to lift up to 70lbs frequently in the performance of duties, with or without accommodation.
  • Valid driver’s license and good driving record.Possession of, or the ability to successfully obtain within a timeframe approved by the Building Services Supervisor, a Class B CDL without air brake restriction issued by the State of Illinois.
  • Ability to successfully complete forklift and end loader training programs.

 Preferred Qualifications

  • Completion of a trade course or technical training in a relevant field.
  • Experience using equipment commonly used in building repairs.
  • Ability to learn computerized systems, such as work order management, keyless access and computerized HVAC systems.
  • Experience managing contractors and vendors.

 Pre-employment drug screening, driving record review, criminal background check and ongoing random drug testing will be required.
