The Position

The Port of Portland is hiring an

Senior Network Engineer

The Senior Network Engineer (Security) designs, engineers, and secures complex hybrid network infrastructures across on-premises and multi-cloud environments. This role serves as the Port's subject matter expert for secure network architecture, network automation, and resilient connectivity, ensuring reliable operations and alignment with zero-trust principles.

In this role, you become the Port's trusted expert for secure hybrid network architecture across on-premises and cloud environments. You'll design next-generation connectivity, implement zero trust controls, engineer resilient network fabrics, drive automation, and lead incident response for some of the most important systems in the region. You'll partner across teams, influence strategy, and shape the network security roadmap that protects essential public-facing and operational services.

Essential Job Duties

Key Responsibilities

Secure Network Architecture, Engineering, and Implementation

  • Design and implement scalable, secure LAN/WAN, data center, wireless, and hybrid cloud architectures (AWS, Azure).
  • Establish architectural standards, zero-trust controls, segmentation strategies, and compliance frameworks.
  • Engineer EVPN-VXLAN overlays, BGP routing VPN solutions (including site-to-site, remote access, and cloud gateways), and enterprise wireless with 802.1X and IoT segmentation.
  • Configure and manage NGFW platforms (Palo Alto, Fortinet, Cisco), including threat prevention, SSL/TLS inspection, and policy lifecycle management.

Secure Network Operations, Incident Response, and Continuous Improvement

  • Maintain and optimize secure, scalable, and resilient network infrastructure across on-premises, cloud, and hybrid environments.
  • Oversee fabrics, underlay/overlay routing, wireless systems, internet routing, and cloud network connectivity.
  • Provide senior-level escalation support to MSP and internal teams; lead RCAs and drive corrective actions.
  • Manage firewalls, monitoring platforms, firmware updates, performance baselines, logging/flow analytics, and automated governance checks.

Strategy, Innovation, and Secure Network Architecture

  • Develop and maintain a security-first network infrastructure strategy and technology roadmap aligned with organizational objectives.
  • Evaluate and recommend advanced architectures, cloud-native patterns, and security frameworks that enhance resilience, performance, automation, and cost-effectiveness.
  • Partner with security, application, and infrastructure teams to deploy, audit, and continuously monitor wired and wireless enterprise networks.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Five (5) + years of Progressive experience in network security, architecture, engineering, and administration roles within medium to large enterprises.
  • Bachelor's Degree - Computer Science or related field, or a combination of related education, industry certification, and demonstrated experience
  • Ability to pass a criminal history records check and maintain eligibility for access to secured areas of the airport as mandated by TSA regulations.
  • CJIS - Level 4 IT Support Certification.
  • Clear credit check (due to access to sensitive financial information).

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Advanced experience with:
    • Next-generation firewalls (Palo Alto, Fortinet, Cisco)
    • VPN technologies (IPsec, SSL VPN, cloud VPN gateways)
    • Zero-trust architecture, segmentation, 802.1X, RADIUS/TACACS+
  • Advanced experience with Agile methodologies for network engineering
  • Advanced experience with Network design, deployment, and optimization (LAN/WAN, wireless, hybrid cloud)
  • Advanced experience with Change management, source control, and configuration management best practices

Supplemental and Selection Information

Selection Process: (tentative schedule):

  1. A minimum qualification evaluation of the education, training, and experience of submitted application packets will take place by Human Resources until this role closes on 5/22/2026.
  2. A Subject Matter Expert (SME) Panel will perform an evaluation of experience and training taken from your employment application materials.
  3. Our goal is to notify candidates who are selected for interviews by 5/27/2026. We will then schedule interviews with candidates who successfully passed the SME evaluation.
