Director of ATR Experiments and Safety Analysis Engineering

Idaho National Laboratory is seeking a Director of ATR Experiments and Safety Analysis Engineering to lead a complex, multi-disciplinary organization supporting the Advanced Test Reactor (ATR). The Director will provide strategic leadership across experiment, nuclear safety, and reactor engineering functions, integrating safety, performance, and innovation. The position oversees diverse engineering teams, ensures alignment with DOE objectives, and drives execution of high-impact nuclear experimentation programs. The Director plays a critical role in shaping organizational direction, fostering cross-functional collaboration, and ensuring operational excellence across reactor and experiment engineering domains.

Essential Job Functions and Responsibilities:

• Provide strategic leadership and direction for ATR Experiment Engineering, integrating experiment, reactor, and nuclear safety engineering functions across multiple departments.
• Oversee the planning, design, execution, and evaluation of complex irradiation experiments, ensuring alignment with national laboratory and DOE mission priorities.
• Lead and develop a multi-disciplinary organization, including managers and technical staff, fostering a culture of accountability, safety, and continuous improvement.
• Ensure compliance with nuclear safety standards, DOE regulations, and quality assurance requirements across all engineering and experiment activities.
• Direct reactor and experiment engineering efforts to optimize ATR performance, reliability, and utilization.
• Establish and maintain strong interfaces with DOE, regulatory bodies, and internal stakeholders to ensure mission alignment and operational transparency.
• Drive integration of experiment infrastructure, configuration management, and engineering processes to support safe and efficient reactor operations.
• Oversee risk management, hazard analysis, and safety basis implementation in collaboration with nuclear safety engineering teams.
• Lead long-range strategic planning, resource allocation, and organizational development to sustain and enhance ATR capabilities.

• Champion innovation and technical excellence in experiment design, reactor systems, and engineering methodologies

Required:

• Bachelor's degree in engineering, nuclear engineering, or a related technical field, and a minimum of 10 years of experience in the field of practice, with at least 5 years in management.
• Significant experience in nuclear engineering, reactor operations, or experiment engineering in a complex technical environment.
• Demonstrated leadership experience managing multi-disciplinary teams and organizations.
• Strong knowledge of nuclear safety principles, DOE regulations, and quality assurance standards
• Experience with reactor systems, irradiation testing, or nuclear facility operations.
• Proven ability to lead large-scale programs, manage budgets, and align technical execution with strategic objectives.
• This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a Department of Energy "L" clearance, which requires US Citizenship.

The ideal candidate will possess:

• Advanced degree (MS or PhD) in nuclear engineering or related discipline.
• Experience working within DOE or national laboratory environments.
• Deep expertise in reactor engineering, experiment engineering, and nuclear safety analysis.
• Strong leadership presence with the ability to influence at senior organizational and external levels.
• Experience driving organizational transformation, innovation, and continuous improvement initiatives.
• Excellent communication skills with the ability to convey complex technical information to diverse stakeholders.
• Demonstrated success in building collaborative partnerships across engineering, operations, and safety organizations.
