Position Summary

This Scientist I role will be in the Parker LORD APS Division and part of the Electronic Materials Global Technology Team in Cary, NC. This role conducts independent technical work to support R&D projects, customers, and/or manufacturing plants under general direction. Conceives, organizes, promotes, and executes ideas and plans to increase the organization's contribution to the discovery and technical approaches to meet business objectives. Works in a chemical laboratory or chemical pilot plant setting as part of a team.

Responsibilities

Product Development Specific Duties:

  • May lead projects of low to medium complexity or segments of higher complexity projects

  • Assess application, performance and manufacturability characteristics of the chemicals/products being developed.

  • Consistently makes adaptations and modifications of experimental procedures where needed.

  • Makes suggestions regarding modification to formulations, samples, tests, equipment, etc.

General Duties:

  • Performs routine and non-routine technical assignments of moderate to high complexity and variety; frequently makes decisions independently.

  • Determines appropriate approach, following accepted procedures, developing new procedures and communicating findings in an effective manner.

  • Oversees technical equipment and supplies, and is involved in the specification and purchase of new equipment.

  • Conducts training for staff as needed.

  • Requires travel up to 10% within the US, with unlikely international trips.


Qualifications

Education

  • Minimum Education & Work Experience: A BS degree in Chemical Engineering, Chemistry or similar. Preferred experience with chemical adhesives, polymeric materials, or in a laboratory environment.

Required competencies

  • Ability to safely work in a chemical laboratory with hazardous chemicals.

  • Adherence to company quality standards and ethics policies.

  • Ability to work effectively in a team environment.

  • Ability to utilize computerized equipment and computer software packages including but not limited to Microsoft Excel, Word, and SAP.

  • Possess strong attention to detail.

  • Ability to apply basic statistics and interpret and communicate results.

  • Possess good written and verbal communication skills.

  • Impact: Tech lead on low complexity, short term projects. Leads portions of projects as a team member. Failure to achieve goals can normally be overcome without serious effect to the team.

  • Technical knowledge: Understanding and wide application of technical principles, theories and concepts in the field. General knowledge of other related disciplines. Intermediate knowledge of key products and/or industry knowledge - customer application, failure analysis.

  • Problem Solving: Solves non-routine technical problems of expanded scope and intermediate complexity. (Design and execution of moderate investigations and troubleshooting, intermediate data analysis, intermediate report generation) Intermediate understanding and utilization of engineering tools, methods, processes (FMEA, process audits, Troubleshooting, etc.)

  • Discretion: Works under only general direction. Independently determines and develops approach to solutions. Work is reviewed upon completion for adequacy in meeting objectives.

  • Interaction: Primarily immediate internal team contacts. Often engages outside of team within the division. Outside of division and external customer contacts on routine matters as needed.
