About the Job

The primary role of this position is to support the PI, Alan Love, on the Minnesota Center for Philosophy of Science (MCPS) research consortium grant "Consortium for the Advancement of a Science of Purpose" (CASP). Responsibilities include ensuring compliance with best practices for data sharing, reproducibility of research, and open access publication as appropriate, relevant, and specified for different grant related activities. This position reports to and works closely under the direction of the project PI and Center Director, Alan Love.

This is a 50% time, hybrid position (20 hours/week) for 2 years, with the possibility of renewal, beginning May 2026.

Please note, this position is not eligible for H-1B or Green Card sponsorship. This position does not offer a STEM OPT training program.

Key Responsibilities:

Open science support:

  • Create and maintain member database and ensure new-hires and consortium members have an ORCID ID. Coordinate updates to membership status with Program/Project Specialist
  • Coordinate Open Access Payments for CASP-related publications by corresponding with authors and publishers during the publication process. Make payments to publishers, tracking spending against available funds
  • Ensure all publications are deposited in a preprint archive in advance of formal publication (e.g. EcoEvoRxiv https://ecoevorxiv.org/ or Bio Rxiv (https://www.biorxiv.org/)
  • Use pre-registration and other tools to share de-identified data to the maximum extent that is legally and ethically permissible in a public, open access repository as a citable object (i.e. with an assigned unique persistent identifier (PID)
  • Ensure that all research materials necessary for an independent researcher to reproduce the reported methodology will be made available as citable objects (i.e., with an assigned DOI or other unique persistent identifier [PID]) in a public, open-access repository (e.g., the Open Science Framework; https://osf.io/). In particular, this includes protocols for experimental platforms, software code for computational modeling, and mathematical proofs for formal models.

Grant publication management:

  • Track all CASP related publications (journal articles, books, book chapters, etc.) using bibliographic citation database and setup for weekly email updates
  • Ensure all outputs acknowledge the granting agency
  • Use bibliographic citation database to track research outputs
  • Ensure archiving of publications on the project's dedicated online administrative platform, as well as institutional repositories of project members and through self-archiving on personal websites or for-profit research aggregators, such as academia.edu or researchgate.net
  • Assemble, format, and disseminate monthly, semi-annual, and annual list of publications, including, at times, Altmetric data
  • Coordinate production of 10 research publicity podcasts & 10 research videos each year of the grant. Act as liaison between researcher and production team to coordinate scheduling and ensure that each project is completed on time
  • Explore new AI tools to support RFP activities that help expand rather than narrow literature searches and generate more serendipitous results

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • BA/BS in an area of biological science, OR a combination of education and experience in research to equal to 4 years
  • Experience with post-award grant management
  • Familiarity with emerging practices related to the open science movement (e.g., preprints, pre-registration, data sharing, digital archiving, and open access)
  • Experience using Zotero and SCOPUS
  • Experience with computerized data management
  • Computer proficiency and ability to navigate multiple software applications
  • Detail-oriented with exceptional organizational, planning and problem-solving skill
  • Ability to work independently, as a part of a team and with changing priorities
  • Demonstrated ability to maintain deadlines and prioritize assignments
  • Excellent written, verbal and interpersonal skills

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Familiarity with University of Minnesota (culture, policies, financial, etc.); passion to work in academic research environment
  • Experience with empirical research, especially in the life sciences, both as a participant and in terms of management or administration
  • Ability to interact with staff, research collaborators (University of Minnesota and other institutions), and students on a professional level
  • Experience in reviewing/submitting scientific manuscripts
  • Experience with Google docs, Google Forms, and Box
  • Ability to develop and foster a collaborative, engaged, adaptable, and high trust team environment
About the Department

The Consortium for Advancing a Science of Purpose (CASP) extends and develops innovative research structures and activities in support of interdisciplinary work in the life sciences.
The program engages a broad community of scholars by bringing together philosophers, theoreticians, and experimentalists to advance the scientific investigation of topics in the life sciences related to the complex theme of teleology (i.e., the study of purposiveness), which includes a variety of contested concepts (e.g., agency, directionality, function, goal-directedness) related to phenomena across spatial and temporal scales.

Pay and Benefits

Pay Range: $26.00/hr - $28.00/hr; depending on education/qualifications/experience

Time Appointment: 50% Appointment
