Responsibilities

The Group facilitator is a member of the Recreation Therapy department and will provide structured group activities to child and adolescents on the inpatient units in a manner that is client centered and interactive. Groups are designed and structured to promote learning of new coping skills, appropriate social interactions, and physical activities. The Groups Facilitator collaborates and communicates with treatment team members regarding patient treatment, progress and/or concerns.

Responsibilities and Accountabilities:

  • Provide structured group activities that include independent living skills, recreation and leisure skills, team building and other life skills.
  • This position works with children and adolescents diagnosed with a mental illness
  • Group Facilitator is considered a direct care provider and provides milieu management and supervision in addition to group facilitation
  • Collaborates with the Recreation Therapy team and treatment teams to provide a therapeutic environment for clients
  • Must be available to provide coverage for other team members as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Two years post-secondary education in Recreation Therapy, Occupational Therapy, Psychology, or a closely related field, or 2 years of experience in a mental health setting with a pediatric population required. (COTAs encouraged to apply as we develop our OT/RT program in the inpatient setting.)
  • Two years post-secondary education in Recreation Therapy, Occupational Therapy, Psychology, or a closely related field, or 2 years of experience in a mental health setting with a pediatric population required.
  • Employee must be able to work weekends (every other) and up to two nights per week until 8 pm.
  • Ability to identify and manage group dynamics and skill in behavior management is required
  • Ability to develop therapeutic rapport with patients, assist patients with skills practice and assist with crisis intervention (including de-escalation and safety holds)
  • Ability to participate in treatment planning for clients through observation, therapeutic intervention, and providing feedback and evaluation regarding patient progress
  • Ability to smoothly and rapidly shift between dissimilar tasks
  • Skills to communicate well both verbally and in writing
  • Ability to react quickly and calmly as part of a team to handle volatile and potentially emergency situations; make effective decisions while in stressful situations and circumstances; and after training, be able to manage disruptive and explosive patients.
  • Must be available to provide coverage for other team members as assigned.

Compensation for this role ranges from $18-23 per hour, depending on education and experience.
