What to Expect
The New Programs Engineering team at Tesla operates at the forefront of vehicle design and development, thriving in an iterative environment to study, simulate, build, and validate the next generation of Tesla vehicles. As a Senior New Programs Engineer in Studio Engineering, you will collaborate closely with interior/exterior design, human factors & ergonomics, and vehicle engineering production teams, including chassis, powertrain, body-in-white, low/high-voltage systems, NVH, durability, and CAE analyses. This role focuses on creating and executing world-class vehicle architectures, leveraging expertise in vehicle systems and attributes to design and deliver full systems, not just components, using a creative, first-principles approach to problem-solving.
What You'll Do
- Operate independently to own a specific vehicle system (e.g., chassis, seating, mechanisms, lighting, HV battery) and/or integrate multiple systems during initial development
- Generate concept proposals aligned with new vehicle program scope and attribute requirements, brainstorming with engineers, designers, and users to create innovative automotive solutions
- Mature exterior and interior Class A surfaces from design sketches to executable surfaces meeting internal and external requirements
- Architect, develop, and mature vehicle systems from initial product scope and concepts through to prototype-level components representing future production vehicles
- Down-select solutions based on quantifiable vehicle attributes, system cost, and weight, proposing and defending solutions in engineering and studio design review meetings
- Develop proposed system solutions in CATIA 3D, resolving interfaces and clearances with chassis, body structure, interior, exterior, thermal, and powertrain components as part of a small interdisciplinary team
- Drive continuous improvement in processes while managing project timelines effectively
What You'll Bring
- Degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field, or equivalent experience
- Minimum of 3 years of relevant engineering experience in OEM/supplier, motorsport, product design, or aerospace industries
- Broad experience with various automotive systems such as chassis, powertrain, thermals, structures, or lighting, along with prototyping expertise
- Proficiency in CAD (CATIA V6 - 3DX) software using parametric elements and knowledge-based engineering tools, with the ability to interpret CAE results and integrate recommendations into designs
- Demonstrated proactivity in improving processes and driving projects, with specific examples provided
- Strong communication skills, resourcefulness, and effective time management
- Experience with subjective and objective evaluation of vehicle attributes in production and prototype vehicles
