SUMMARY:

Under the direction of the Director of Patient Safety, the Patient Safety and Quality Project Manager leads the planning, coordination, and execution of complex patient safety and quality initiatives across Brown University Health. This role operates with a high degree of autonomy and accountability, applying advanced project management expertise, critical thinking, and judgment to support cross-functional teams, governance committees, and leadership in driving measurable safety and quality improvement outcomes.

The Patient Safety and Quality Project Manager serves as a key liaison between clinical, operational, quality, and patient safety stakeholders. The role ensures initiatives are aligned with organizational strategy, regulatory requirements, and best practices in healthcare quality and patient safety, while maintaining robust documentation, monitoring progress, and supporting a culture of safety and continuous improvement.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Project Leadership & Management

  • Lead end-to-end project management for patient safety and quality initiatives, from concept through implementation, sustainability, and evaluation.

  • Develop and maintain project plans, timelines, risk registers, corrective action plans, and status reports.

  • Coordinate and deliver multiple workstreams in parallel, ensuring timely completion of deliverables without compromising quality.

  • Monitor progress, identify risks and barriers, and proactively escalate concerns to Patient Safety and Quality leadership.

  • Support implementation and follow-up of corrective action plans related to patient safety events and quality performance.

Stakeholder Engagement & Governance

  • Serve as a primary liaison regarding patient safety event reporting systems and data with clinical, operational, and administrative leaders across the organization.

  • Facilitate multidisciplinary meetings, workgroups, and project teams to drive engagement and accountability.

  • Build momentum across multiple levels of the organization to support timely reporting and resolution of patient safety initiatives.

  • Provide and present Patient Safety data to multidisciplinary committees.

Committee, Event Review & Executive Support

  • Coordinate patient safety committees and workgroups, including agenda development, preparation of materials, and documentation.

  • Support the preparation, scheduling, documentation, and follow-up of patient safety event data, serious safety event reviews, apparent cause analyses, and related proceedings.

  • Track decisions, action items, and follow-up activities to completion and ensure appropriate leadership visibility.

  • Provide updates, dashboards, and reports to and on behalf of Patient Safety and Quality leadership, senior management and Board-level committees.

Data, Reporting & Performance Improvement

  • Analyze patient safety and quality performance metrics and translate findings into actionable insights.

  • Prepare reports, scorecards, and presentations for leadership, committees, and regulatory or accreditation purposes.

  • Support data collection, validation, and reporting related to patient safety events, quality measures, and culture of safety initiatives.

  • Maintain accurate, timely documentation and tracking of project activities, outcomes, and metrics.

Education, Communication & Professional Practice

  • Serve as a project coordination and education resource for Patient Safety and Quality, acting as a consultant and role model for staff.

  • Facilitate or support patient safety and quality education and training initiatives on behalf of leadership.

  • Contribute to the development, review, and implementation of patient safety and quality policies, procedures, and tools.

  • Develop executive-level correspondence, presentations, and written communications.

  • Maintain confidentiality, professionalism, discretion, and a high standard of ethical practice.

Other Duties

  • Perform additional duties assigned to support departmental, system-wide, and organizational goals.

EDUCATION:

  • Bachelor's degree required in healthcare administration, nursing, public health, biology, or related field.

  • Master's degree preferred.

EXPERIENCE:

  • Five or more years of progressively responsible experience in patient safety, quality improvement, project management, or healthcare operations.

  • Demonstrated experience coordinating complex projects, committees, or improvement initiatives in a healthcare setting.

  • Experience supporting patient safety event reporting platforms.

  • Experience supporting patient safety event review processes, corrective action plans, and performance improvement activities strongly preferred.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Project management certification (PMP, Lean, Six Sigma) and/or Certified Professional in Patient Safety (CPPS).

  • Experience with patient safety event reporting, quality, and performance improvement systems (e.g., RLDatix, Press Ganey, Leapfrog).

  • Experience supporting culture of safety surveys, patient safety event reporting platforms.

  • Proven ability to work independently in a fast-paced, multidisciplinary healthcare environment.

Pay Range:

$90,729.60-$149,697.60
