Position Summary

The Lead Mason is responsible for providing support to properties managed by UCLA Housing & Hospitality. The Lead Mason will serve as a working lead over Mason's and Facilities Mechanics and will be responsible for General Masonry for preventative and predictive maintenance programs and repairs, installation of new work as directed. Assist the manager in overseeing the work performance of the staff regarding customer service, quality of workmanship, and quantity of work performed. This position is also responsible for assisting the manager as required to supervise work of outside contractors to ensure that all work is performed in a cost-effective manner with special consideration to customer service and regularly changing priorities. The Lead Mason will interact with various department contacts and UCLA personnel while performing duties and will be required to maintain a courteous and professional manner at all times. The Lead Mason will perform the work of a Mason, in addition to transmitting orders and explaining tasks to co-workers and perform record-keeping and ordering functions. Lead Mason will need to operate a University Vehicle and travel to various locations for transporting equipment and completing repairs. The Mason shall perform masonry, plastering, and painting repair work. Construct, maintain, and repair concrete forms, and perform stucco and brick laying work as needed.

Qualifications

  • 8 years of progressive masonry experience in an education or hospitality field. (Required)
  • Working knowledge of the materials, equipment, methods, and tools of the mason's trade, such as a variety of trade-related hand/power tools, e.g. core-boring machine, air compressor, etc., including achievement of operational level skills. (Required)
  • Ability to install, maintain, and repair cement, stone, brick, ceramic tile, and marble surfaces; lathe and plaster of walls. Ability to troubleshoot problems and signs of damage or deterioration in masonry surfaces of building foundations, walkways, retaining walls, etc. (Required)
  • Ability to read, interpret, and understand technical language in specifications, schematics, and blueprints. Skill in modifying and/or adapting designs, procedures, or methods to make necessary alterations and modifications. (Required)
  • Skill in estimating material and labor requirements to accomplish task. Ability to prioritize, schedule, and coordinate work projects; direct and inspect the work of subordinates; train and evaluate subordinates' effectiveness against job standards. (Required)
  • Ability to resolve any inaccuracies in workmanship and/or correct customer concerns. (Required)
  • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with peers, subordinates, supervisors, administrators, customers, visitors, and outside agencies. (Required)
  • Skill in reading, understanding, and interpreting administrative policy and procedure manuals. (Required)
  • Ability to work independently and follow through on assignments. (Required)
  • Working knowledge of UBC, OSHA, and ADA requirements as it relations to the function. Ability to recognize discrepancies of ADA and Fire/Life/Safety codes at each job and report to supervisor. Working knowledge of standard safe work practices. (Required)
  • Ability to stand, crawl, walk, and stoop; push and pull, lift and lower objects up to 50 lbs.; push and pull, lift or lower objects weighing up to 70 lbs. with assistance. Ability to work indoors and outdoors, in wet or humid weather, and in fluctuate. Ability to work in confined spaces. (Required)
  • Must possess California Driver's License, Class C. Ability to drive a truck or other light vehicle in the course of duties. (Required)
  • Ability to work overtime and weekends, and various shifts. (Required)

  • Other Type of Degree Satisfactory completion of a certified four-year trade-related apprenticeship program or equivalent experience and education. (Required)
  • Must possess, upon hire, and maintain a valid CA noncommercial Class C License in accordance with the California (CA) Department of Motor Vehicles. (Required)
