ENERGY MARSHAL, NATIONAL PROJECTS (DATA CENTERS)

The Energy Marshal is responsible for leading and governing safe energization activities within a mission-critical construction environment. This role serves as the authority for hazardous energy control, ensuring all energization, isolation, and restoration activities are executed in strict accordance with electrical safety standards and established best practices.

The Energy Marshal coordinates closely with construction teams, commissioning agents, trade partners, and facility stakeholders to control energy isolation boundaries, manage system transitions, and mitigate operational risk. This role maintains oversight of all energization permitting, subcontractor LOTO personnel, and the development and execution of detailed energy control plans.

LOTO plans must clearly define:



  • Procedural methods and sequence of work
  • Energy isolation points
  • Live-dead-live verification requirements
  • Restoration and re-energization steps


The Energy Marshal also maintains and audits LOTO documentation, reviews short circuit coordination study results and associated PPE requirements, and ensures accurate tracking and communication of energized equipment and system status to the site team.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Required:



  • 10+ years of experience in construction management, power distribution installation, energy isolation, and electrical safety
  • NFPA 70E Certification or NFPA Certified Electrical Safety Compliance Professional (CESCP)
  • Demonstrated experience managing complex energization and LOTO programs
  • Strong working knowledge of multiple energy sources, particularly electrical systems
  • Deep understanding of commissioning processes, testing methodologies, and applicable industry standards (ASHRAE, NFPA, ANSI/BICSI, NETA)
  • Proven project management capability with the ability to manage competing priorities and stakeholders


Preferred:



  • Experience in Data Center Construction
  • CX Alloy proficient
  • Procore proficient
  • OSHA 30 certified

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with exceptional attention to detail.
  • Ability to effectively communicate with both technical and non-technical stakeholders. Strong collaboration and verbal and written communication skills with the ability to function as an integral team member, working under time constraints and meeting deadlines in a changing environment

CORE RESPONSIBLITIES:

Hazardous Energy Control & Compliance



  • Lead and enforce Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) programs across medium- and low-voltage electrical systems, UPS systems, generators, switchgear, and associated mechanical equipment.
  • Define and manage energy isolation boundaries to protect personnel and infrastructure.
  • Verify zero-energy states prior to authorizing maintenance, commissioning, or construction activities.
  • Review and approve energized work permits in alignment with NFPA 70E and company policy.
  • Establish arc flash boundaries, confirm PPE requirements, and ensure safe approach distances are maintained.
  • Audit LOTO logs and subcontractor compliance to ensure procedural adherence and regulatory alignment.


Energization Management & System Coordination



  • Serve as the central authority during switching operations, shutdowns, startups, and system transfers.
  • Coordinate energization sequences with construction and commissioning teams to maintain schedule and protect critical loads.
  • Develop and manage energization permits and control processes.
  • Partner with Facilities, Operations, and trade partners to proactively identify and mitigate system risk.
  • Participate in commissioning and startup activities to ensure safe system turnover.


Documentation & Risk Management



  • Maintain detailed switching logs, isolation records, and energization tracking documentation.
  • Review short circuit coordination studies and confirm alignment of PPE requirements.
  • Ensure all hazardous energy documentation is accurate, complete, and retained per policy.
  • Support incident investigations and recommend corrective and preventative actions.
  • Communicate real-time energization status updates to project leadership and stakeholders.

OFFICE AND TRAVEL:




  • Works in regional office with regular regional travel. In addition to regional meetings and some overnight travel may be required.

The role also requires occasional visits to construction sites, where the employee may be exposed to dust, dirt, uneven surfaces, outdoor weather conditions, and extreme temperatures.
