General Responsibilities: Terracon is seeking to hire a Field Scientist to join our Environmental team in Birmingham, AL! Conduct ecological and natural resource field surveys such as wetland delineations, threatened and endangered species assessments/surveys, tree inventories, and other ecological studies as necessary. Responsibilities may also include NEPA evaluations, environmental site investigations, assessments and surveys to sample, measure and analyze a wide variety of environmental factors such as air, water, material, and soil. Identify and evaluate ecological risk factors and recommend risk strategies/designs to ensure compliance with federal, state and local regulations. Prepare applicable permit applications, risk assessments and technical documents including proposals, reports and regulatory agency correspondence. This position requires the management of small, medium, and large-scale ecological projects, conducting field work, preparing scientific reports, training more inexperienced staff members, and conducting various business development activities.
Essential Roles and Responsibilities:
- Performs site visits, field observations and field data collection or assignments.
- Conduct ecological and natural resource field surveys such as wetland delineations and threatened and endangered species assessments/surveys.
- Lead site visits for multiple state, federal, and local regulatory agencies.
- This scientific professional is responsible for project management, field activities, and client management.
- Implements technical requirements to complete client projects by directing and supervising field staff to collect data and/or document site activities.
- Responsible for developing written proposals to clients for both small and large projects including quality control review of proposals written by others.
- Evaluates complex field data and assembles in written reports.
- Participates with more senior scientists/engineers on large, more complex projects
- Follow safety rules, guidelines and standards for all projects. Participate in pre-task planning. Report any safety issues or concerns to management.
- Be responsible for maintaining quality standards on all projects.
- May serve as team member or lead in meetings and communications with client pertaining to specific projects/tasks.
- May oversee work performed by lower-level scientists/engineers and Technicians.
Requirements: Requirements:
- Bachelor's degree in Biology, Ecology, Environmental Science or closely related science field.
- Minimum of 5 years' related experience. Or, in lieu of a degree, a minimum of 9 years' related experience.
- Ability to work in various climates and terrain for extended periods of time.
- Expert knowledge of Southeastern ecosystems, flora, and fauna.
- Experience preparing and managing United State Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) Section 404/10 permit applications.
- Verifiable experience acting as lead scientist conducting wetland delineations consistent with Federal and State delineation methodologies.
- Valid driver's license with acceptable violation history.
- Some overnight travel and flexibility in work schedule may be required.
Preferred qualifications:
- Professional Wetland Scientist
- ISA Certified Arborist
- GIS experience
- Completion of the 40-hour wetland delineators course
- Permitting experience
