Job Summary:
Under general supervision, performs a variety of tasks including standing on the paving machine making sure the flow of pavement is coming out correctly. Screed operation on the asphalt paver involves making normal adjustments for obtaining proper depth, grade and finished cross section of asphalt material via screed controls.
Essential Job Duties & Responsibilities:
Operate asphalt paver and or screed to apply asphalt per plan and quality specifications as instructed by crew superintendent to ensure daily schedules/estimates are met.
- Perform additional tasks of other positions as needed and instructed by foreman
- Ability to operate or initiative to learn to operate other equipment required on an asphalt crew
- May oil, grease, service and make normal operating adjustments to the equipment
- Ability to operate asphalt paver/screed within designated area with attention to detail and emphasis on craftsmanship
- Ability to guide and direct dump trucks while backing up to machine hopper when operating paver
- Manipulates hand or foot levers to control movements of machine spreads and levels asphalt on subgrade of highway and related surfaces such as parking lots, streets, etc.
- Follow instructions and work as a member of a team.
Qualifications (Experience, Education & Certifications, Key Attributes):
Qualifications:
- Pass pre-employment screen and criminal background check
- Thorough understanding of all aspects of the paving industry including preparatory work, grades, drainage, paving patterns, aggregate size, job specifications, oil consistencies, compaction and other details related to asphalt paving.
- Be willing to work holidays and weekends when necessary, and Over time as needed
- Great attention to detail and stress tolerance
Physical and Environmental Specific Requirements:
- This position operates at professional construction sites, requiring the ability to communicate verbally with others on site, in person and over the telephone, ability to read printed materials, signs and directions.
- Stamina to maintain attention despite interruptions, ability to lift, push, pull, carry, handle or feel objects, supplies, tools, machinery and/or controls weighing up to 50 pounds and reach with hands and arms; climb stairs and/or ladders; balance, bend, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, lift overhead, traverse around or otherwise one's self around the required work and safety requirements to navigating and perform activities on various construction sites in a safe manner.
- Will be required to work on project sites and operate vehicles, trailers, machinery, equipment and other tools within local, state and federal safety guidelines.
- The position requires working outside, frequently for long periods of time in all weather, including extreme heat and cold temperatures.
- While working, the employee may be exposed to various chemicals, vapors, pollutants, virus or other air-borne pathogens, gases, uneven surfaces, loud noises, moving vehicles or machines and dust/debris.
Education and Training:
- Must be a high school graduate
- 2-5 years experienced as screed operator
- Low temperatures: Occasionally

- Hazardous conditions: Rarely
- Shift work, to include overnight work: Constantly
