The NC State Veterinary Hospital (VH), established in 1983, is one of the highest rated veterinary academic medical centers in the country, serving communities throughout North Carolina as well as many other states. Essential Job Duties
Are you passionate about large animal health and looking to work at the heart of a fast-paced clinical environment? The Equine and Farm Animal Veterinary Center is seeking a dedicated Veterinary Assistant to provide "front-line" clinical and operational support for our patients. In this role, you aren't just assisting; you are a vital part of the hospital ecosystem, ensuring the highest standards of husbandry, emergency triage, and infectious disease control while helping shape the next generation of veterinary professionals.

Key Responsibilities:

1. Clinical Support & Patient Care


  • Hourly Care: Manage all hourly treatments, monitoring, and husbandry for a varied large animal caseload.

  • Emergency Response: Provide critical support for triage and immediate treatment of emergency arrivals.

  • Veterinary Assistance: Partner with veterinarians during examinations, complex treatments, and animal restraint/handling. Capable of lifting up to 70 pounds and sustaining physical labor over long shifts, with the flexibility to work beyond scheduled hours as patient needs arise.



2. Educational Leadership


  • Mentorship: Assist in training students, interns, and house officers in proper large animal handling and clinical duties.

  • Best Practices: Model excellence in patient care for those entering the veterinary field.


3. Hospital Operations & Inventory


  • Logistics: Oversee inventory control, supply ordering, and equipment maintenance (including repair schedules).

  • Administrative Accuracy: Ensure billing is correct, flow sheets are updated accurately, and communication remains seamless across all ancillary hospital services.


4. Safety & Compliance


  • Bio-Security: Maintain strict adherence to all Infectious Disease protocols to ensure a safe environment.

  • Availability: Participate in a rotating schedule that includes on-call shifts, weekends, and holidays to ensure 24/7 patient coverage.


Qualifications

  • Proven experience in large animal handling (Equine and/or Farm Animal).
  • Ability to thrive in a high-pressure, emergency-driven environment.
  • Strong communication skills and a collaborative mindset.
  • Attention to detail regarding medical records and hospital safety protocols.

Qualifications




Minimum Experience/Education
Completion of an accredited training program in the area of assignment; or equivalent combination of training and experience.

Some positions may require additional Training, Certifications, or Licensure.
Preferred Qualifications


  • Professional Credentials & Experience:North Carolina Registered Veterinary Technician (RVT) with a background in equine clinical care, ideally within a referral or teaching hospital setting.

  • Clinical Proficiency & Safety: Experienced in large animal handling and comfortable working around zoonotic diseases, hazardous materials, and gas anesthetics while maintaining high standards of care.

  • Communication & Service Excellence: Proven ability to provide top-tier customer service and maintain professional, effective communication during emotionally charged or high-pressure situations.

  • Team Collaboration & Critical Thinking: A proactive problem-solver who works effectively in a team, utilizes veterinary software/electronics, and exercises sound independent judgment to ensure patient safety.

  • A valid NC driver's license must be obtained within 60 days of start date and must be maintained throughout employment.
