SUMMARY:

Under the supervision of a registered nurseperformsa variety of patient care functions toprovide assistancein carrying out patient care assignments. All essential functions performed in this position reflect the age-specific needs of the patients.

NOTE: All student nurse interns will be required to have a nursing assistant license at time of hire.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
Assists patients with activities of daily living.
Assists registered nurse with all aspects of the nursing process including, but not limited to,assistingwith collection of baseline and ongoing assessment data, following the nursing management plan, andmonitoringthe patient response to nursing interventions.
Provides and/or reinforces patient instruction.
Performs designated treatments under supervision according toNursingDepartment Policy and Procedure.
Functions as a patient sitter for safety watch cases.
Assists in the overall function of the nursing unit underdirectionof a registered nurse.
Demonstrates accountability and responsibility as a hospital employee.
Maintains quality assurance, safety, environmental, and infection control,in accordance withestablished hospital department policies, procedures, andobjectives.
Performs other related duties as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

BASIC KNOWLEDGE:

ACTIVE NURSING ASSISTANT LICENSE IN THE STATE OF RHODE ISLAND UPON HIRE.
Current certification in Basic Life Support through the American Heart Association
Current matriculation in a Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE) accredited Baccalaureate Degree Program in Nursing is preferred. Candidates in anAssociatesDegree Program will be considered.

Demonstrated knowledge and skills necessary to provide care to patients throughout the life span with consideration of aging processes, human development stages, and cultural patterns in each step of the care process.

EXPERIENCE:

Completion of one clinical rotation in an acute care hospital setting.

WORK ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Prolonged sitting, standing, and walking. Exposed to all patient elements. Will berequiredto lift/turn patients and equipment. Repeated bending, squatting, stooping.

INDEPENDENT ACTION:
Works under the supervision of the Registered Nurse within the scope of Hospital and department policies and procedures.Refersspecific complex problems tosupervisorwhere clarification of departmental policies and procedures may berequired. Supervisory staff is physically present most of the time. Performs approved nursing procedures as delegated by the registered nurse and in compliance with Brown University Health policies and procedures.
