The School of Advanced Computing's Technology and Applied Computing Program within the Viterbi School of Engineering is seeking a Student Services Specialist to join their team. This position provides intermediate-level academic advising and operational coordination for students pursuing either a minor or specialization in one of 12 technical fields. This role requires independent judgment, problem-solving, and detailed knowledge of academic policies and procedures.

This position may be assigned one of the following specialization areas, with responsibilities adjusted accordingly:

  • Undergraduate Advising: comprehensive case management, degree tracking, and student success support.
  • Master's Advising: graduate enrollment, petitions, and graduation processing.
  • Combined Advising: cross-level advising within departments that may integrate multiple populations.

These specializations are intended to reflect the advisor's primary area of focus; however, job duties may be reassigned based on areas of greatest need within the department. All advising functions are performed in accordance with the Viterbi Student Services Handbook: Standards & Expectations for Academic Advising and its Appendix: Service Standards & Benchmarks.

CORE RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Provide academic advising and administrative coordination for assigned student population(s).
  • Review and approve petitions, academic actions, and degree progress updates.
  • Manage student records, communications, and documentation in compliance with University policy.
  • Advise students and faculty on academic policies, deadlines, and degree requirements.
  • Support course scheduling, orientation, and events related to student success.
  • Serve as a departmental liaison to the VASE Student & Academic Services team and central USC offices.
  • Contribute to departmental projects, data reporting, and process improvement efforts.
  • Train and mentor entry-level advising staff or student workers as assigned.

VITERBI STUDENT SERVICE STANDARDS

Executes student engagement and academic enrichment programs in conformance with the Viterbi Student Services Handbook: Standards & Expectations for Academic Advising and its companion Appendix: Service Standards & Benchmarks. These standards reflect Viterbi's commitment to equitable, accurate, and student-centered service through collaboration between the VASE central team and academic departments.

REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS & TEAM STRUCTURE
Reports to: Departmental Student Services Manager, Director of Student Services, or Designated Administrator. Collaborates closely with: Faculty, departmental staff, and the VASE Student & Academic Services team.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor's degree required; Master's degree preferred.
  • Minimum of three years of experience in academic advising or student services.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of USC academic policies and systems.
  • Strong communication, interpersonal, and analytical skills.
  • Proven ability to manage complex student cases and maintain accurate records.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
All Student Services, Programs, and Engagement staff, both within VASE and in the academic departments, are required to work onsite a minimum of four days per week, with one remote day permitted. Work schedules must align with regular USC business hours to ensure consistent service delivery and effective team collaboration. This schedule applies uniformly across all units, and adherence to it is an expectation of employment in support of the School's student service standards.

The base salary range for this position is $34.04 - $38.99/hour. When extending an offer of employment, the University of Southern California considers factors such as (but not limited to) scope of responsibilities, work experience, education and training, skills, internal equity, and market conditions.
