The Role:

The Chief Nursing Officer (CNO) provides executive leadership for nursing, ancillary, and support departments while overseeing hospital operations. This dual leader partners with clinical and operational leaders, medical staff, and the CAO to ensure efficient operations, successful execution of strategic plans, strong workforce recruitment and retention, and an exceptional patient experience.

As the senior nursing executive, the CNO is responsible for all nursing services at the facility level and ensures alignment with Providence Health & Services system and regional goals. This role ensures optimal care delivery, regulatory readiness, quality outcomes, and evidencebased nursing practice, all while fostering a culture grounded in safety, collaboration, and patientcenteredness.

The CNO advances the PHSOR Nursing strategic vision, drives operational excellence, and leads change across departments and service lines. A dottedline reporting relationship to the Regional CNO ensures strong alignment across the Providence system.

What You'll Do:



  • Provide strategic direction to achieve local, regional, and system initiatives, including nursingspecific strategic goals.
  • Integrate regional and sitebased programs to maximize resources, expand services, and meet community needs.
  • Oversee inpatient care units and assigned departments, ensuring clinical and operational excellence.
  • Partner with the Regional CNO, CMO, and medical directors to achieve quality, safety, and patient satisfaction goals.
  • Collaborate with physicians, ensuring an optimal clinical practice environment and supporting medical staff needs.
  • Participate in strategic planning and budget development with the CAO, finance leaders, and site managers.
  • Keep patients at the center of all decisions, champion exceptional patient and family experiences.
  • Develop coordinated systems of care that enhance seamless care across the continuum.
  • Implement evidencebased practice models to reduce variation and improve outcomes.
  • Lead implementation of the Quality Strategic Plan and monitor outcomes across the continuum.
  • Represent Providence in community organizations, boards, and public events, advocate for improved health and nursing practice.
  • Ensure regulatory compliance readiness and support audit preparation.
  • Coordinate service line development and business priorities in collaboration with system and regional leaders.
  • Serve as sponsor or lead for key councils, committees, and multidisciplinary teams.
  • Promote professional growth through mentoring, coaching, leadership development, and succession planning.
  • Support technology implementation and optimization, including electronic health record improvements.
  • Participate in facility planning, equipment needs, and physical redesign projects.
  • Lead service excellence initiatives and timely resolution of patient/customer concerns.
  • Support leadership team meetings, staff education, and organizationwide learning.
  • Provide oversight of assigned infrastructure functions as designated by the CAO.

What You'll Bring:



  • Education
  • Bachelor's degree in nursing
  • Master's degree in healthcare or business administration
  • Certifications & Licensure
  • Oregon Registered Nurse License (Vendor Managed) - required
  • National certification in nursing administration or ACHE credential - preferred
  • Experience
  • 10+ years of administrative experience in healthcare
  • At least 5 years in a nursing, finance, or operations director role - or CNO role
  • Experience leading multiple clinical and operational departments in a complex health system
  • Skills & Competencies

Posted are the minimum and the maximum wage rates on the wage range for this position. The successful candidate's placement on the wage range for this position will be determined based upon relevant job experience and other applicable factors. These amounts are the base pay range; additional compensation may be available for this role, such as shift differentials, standby/on-call, overtime, premiums, extra shift incentives, or bonus opportunities.
