Job Summary

Working with the General Counsel and focusing on employment issues, this position provides a broad range of legal services to the institution, with emphasis on Human Resource activities.



Major Job Responsibilities

    Serve as the key legal advisor on employment law and employee relations matters
  • Provide legal advice on employment matters, including but not limited to wage-hour compliance, workplace accommodations, leaves of absence, compliance with employment and business policies, hiring, promotions, performance management, disciplinary issues, and discharge.
  • Work with Human Resources and management to help minimize legal exposure. This will include but is not limited to proactive review of employment policies, procedures, handbooks, and agreements; preparation of legal documents, memoranda, and other forms of legal advice.
  • Handle pre-litigation claims, settlement negotiations and mediations, and federal and state litigation, including management of outside counsel as necessary.
  • Provide counsel and coordinate response to investigation, discovery and subpoenas.
  • Manage outside employment counsel to efficiently deliver legal services
  • Stay current on changes in employment laws and regulations
  • Provide advice on labor, benefits, visa and classification matters
  • Prepare, review and revise contracts
  • Other duties as assigned


Qualifications

  • JD from an accredited law school and strong academic credentials
  • Admitted to California Bar or eligible to waive in
  • 5-7 years of employment legal experience


Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge of legal principles, practices, and proceedings and of laws and regulations
  • Experience responding to administrative agency changes, and investigations
  • Familiarity with major employment laws, including Title VII, ADEA, ADA, FMLA, FLSA, OSHA, and state and local law
  • Ability to identify and analyze complex issues and evaluate their broader implications for the business; interact with clients at all levels; provide timely, practical legal advice and solutions; and communicate effectively in person and in writing
  • Skill in legal research, writing, and analysis; in using reasoning and logic; in identifying and solving complex problems and in creating workload priorities
  • Familiarity with benefits and immigration law helpful
  • Willingness to work as part of a team, showing commitment to collegiality
  • Ability to work independently, exercise sound judgment, and take responsibility
  • Ability and willingness to develop expertise in other topics to meet Getty needs
  • Integrity and ability to foster trust and collaboration
  • Familiarity with not-for-profit organizations
