The City of West Allis is now hiring for a Water Maintainer to join our dedicated Public Works team! Are you a hands-on problem solver who takes pride in maintaining vital infrastructure? In this skilled role, you'll be responsible for the operation, maintenance, and repair of the City's water distribution system-critical work that directly supports the health, safety, and well-being of our community. This position requires emotional intelligence, a strong work ethic, accountability, and initiative to perform the duties effectively.
What You'll Do
- Operate, maintain, and repair the City's water distribution system to ensure public health and safety.
- Serve as a competent person on excavation sites, ensuring safety and compliance.
- Direct and assist crews in water main repairs, valve maintenance, and service leak responses.
- Operate heavy motorized equipment (backhoes, loaders, drill rigs, hydro-excavation trucks).
- Perform semi-skilled construction and maintenance tasks on water infrastructure.
- Lead small crews and assist in training Maintenance Repairers.
- Maintain accurate records, work orders, and reports using asset management systems.
- Read and interpret GIS utility maps, as-built drawings, and construction plans.
- Communicate effectively with residents, contractors, and other departments.
- Respond to emergencies such as water main breaks, pressure test failures, and hydrant flushing.

What You Bring
- Hands-on problem-solving skills and pride in maintaining vital infrastructure.

- Ability to lead crews and train others.
- Familiarity with underground utilities and equipment used for water main and service repairs.
- High School diploma or GED.
- Valid CDL (Class B or C with airbrakes) and Tanker Endorsement.
- 2+ years of water infrastructure experience with backhoe operation.
- Availability for nights, weekends, overtime, and emergency duty on a rotational watch.
