Responsibilities
This position is responsible for providing leadership and direction for the daily operations of the Immunohematology laboratory. The primary duties include overseeing the clinical laboratory testing procedures, timely result delivery, client satisfaction and supervision of laboratory staff.
As defined by CLIA/NYSDOH, this position is responsible for pre-analytic, analytic procedures, maintaining records of tests, and reporting test results in a high complexity laboratory.
- This position performs only those tests that are authorized by the CLIA/NYSDOH laboratory director and performs only those tests that require a degree of skill commensurate with the individual's education, training or experience, and technical abilities.
- Assures technical accuracy and compliance of staff, computer systems, equipment and all processes involved in serologic and genetic testing of patient and donor samples, through development and maintenance of SOP's and validation plans which are compliant with manufacturers package inserts, FDA and other regulating agencies.
- Assures department personnel are properly trained to perform assigned duties and maintain proper documentation of training including annual competency assessments of staff.
- Participates in and coordinates ongoing research, development and validation of new procedures, equipment and computer system changes.
- Develops and implements corrective action as needed to resolve issues of non-compliance identified through periodic audits, competency assessment, or routine process monitoring.
- Maintains department standards through ongoing education of department employees, proper recruitment/hiring of new employees, and employee termination when appropriate.
- Performs periodic employee performance reviews on to ensure laboratory operations maximizes productivity and responsiveness.
- Prepares and monitors departmental annual budget, manages staffing hours and manages departmental reagent inventories to contribute to the financial management of the department.
- Conduct inspections with regulatory agency inspectors and internal audits.
- Oversee the inventory of specialty blood products inventory.
- Participate in regional or national professional blood bank associations to promote business opportunities.
- Provide on-call and weekend laboratory consultation coverage as needed or assigned.
- Monitor TAT metrics and resolve delays or bottlenecks in workflows.
- Respond promptly and professionally to client concerns, complaints, or inquiries.
- Promotes organizational vision and mission. Contributes to the fulfillment of these goals through professional communication and interactions, teamwork between departments, and participation in interdepartmental committees and task forces.
- Ensure processes are in place to ensure the laboratory maintains appropriate supplies, equipment, and reagent inventory.
- Ensure that the regular maintenance of laboratory equipment is scheduled and completed.
- Oversight of commercial reagent programs where applicable.
Qualifications
Education:
- Bachelor's Degree in Clinical Laboratory Science, Medical Technologist, Immunohematology or a related field.
Experience:
- Six or more years of relevant technical and service-related industry experience in a high-complexity laboratory or blood bank setting with two or more years of supervisory/managerial experience in a laboratory setting.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Master's degree or other advanced degree in a related field.
Licenses / Certification:
- New York State Clinical laboratory technologist license required.
- SBB certification is preferred.
Knowledge:
- Advanced knowledge of departmental processes, policies, and procedures.
- Knowledge of Immunohematology / Transfusion Medicine.
- Knowledge of a variety of software applications (Microsoft Office Suite).
- Working knowledge of FDA, CLIA, and AABB regulations and standards.
- Basic knowledge of OSHA regulations.

All candidates must meet the New York State Training, Regulations and Codes listed below:
- Education and training sufficient to qualify for licensure as a Clinical Laboratory Technologist prior to 2009 as specified in NYS-ED Regulation 79-13.4.
- Pursuant to New York Codes, Rules and Regulations, Title 10 Section 58-1.4 Qualifications of Laboratory Supervisor (c), there is no substitute for the experience criteria.
Any combination of education, training and experience that has supplied the necessary knowledge, skills and experience to perform the essential functions of the job. For applicants who will perform this position in New York City or Westchester County, the proposed annual salary is $154,698.00p/yr. to $168,056.00p/yr. For applicants who will perform this position outside of New York City or Westchester County, salary will reflect local market rates and be commensurate with the applicant's skills, job-related knowledge, and experience. Unless otherwise specified, all posted opportunities are located in the New York or Greater Tri-State office locations.
