Job Summary

Nurse-Family Partnership (NFP), a maternal and early childhood home visiting program, fosters long-term success for first-time parents and their babies and seeks to address some of the serious systemic problems affecting our community. Building on this research, NFP along with Goodwill of Central and Southern Indiana addresses the fragmented structure of the social services industry by taking a holistic, whole-family approach. Mental health support is identified as a critical component of the NFP model. In the Indianapolis site, 15% of clients self-report mental health issues as a chronic health condition on intake. 84% of nurses reported that some of the families they serve have adult mental health issues. The impact of this on parent-child interaction is clear, and concerning. 30% of nurses said most of their families have challenges with parent-child interaction, and 62% report that some families have challenges. The NFP Mental Health Clinician provides telehealth support to clients who their Nurse Home Visitor assesses as needing counseling by a qualified mental health specialist.

Example Duties and Activities

  • Provides telehealth, and possibly in-person, mental health counseling to clients who are referred by NFP nurses.

  • Refers as needed to appropriate mental health facilities for medication management, or more extensive care.

  • Documents and reports per grant and program requirements.

  • Attends weekly in person meetings.

  • Receives clinical supervision and reflective supervision weekly with the MH team manager (PMHNP-BC).

Required Competencies

  • Degree and Credential Requirements - Master's degree in Social Work (MSW) with LSW/LCSW, or Master's in Counseling (LMHC-A/LMHC), Marriage and Family Counseling (LMFT-A, LMFT), Doctorate in Psychology (HSPP), or board certified Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner. Infant Mental Health endorsement Level II (IME-H) or satisfaction of core requirements within 1 year of hire.Certification in Perinatal Mental Health or certification completed within 1 year of hire. Trained in Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) preferred or willing to be trained.

  • Communication Skills - Articulates thoughts and expresses ideas effectively using oral, written, visual, and non-verbal communication skills, as well as listening skills to comprehend customers' needs. Delivers information in person, in writing, and in a digital world.

  • Emotional Intelligence - Recognizes one's own emotions and those of others, uses emotional information to open-mindedly guide thinking and behavior, discerns between different feelings and labels them appropriately, and adjusts emotions to adapt to environments. Is empathetic and compassionate, and maintains a nonjudgemental perspective in difficult situations.

  • Teamwork - Works well with others and makes valued contributions in a team setting in order to achieve the required goals and outcomes. Contributes to creating a positive work environment that promotes productivity, mentoring, teamwork, and partnership.

  • Technical Knowledge - Has working knowledge of G Suite and MS Office and is open to acquiring new computer skills.

Preferred Competencies

  • Industry Expertise - Has healthcare experience in maternal/child health, infant/toddler mental health, perinatal mental health, public/community health, home visiting, and/or mental/behavioral health consultation and counseling.

  • Information Monitoring/Reporting - Collects and reviews information to manage or improve processes and/or activities. Completes all assigned reports. Reads, interprets, and follows financial reports to be able to communicate information to others and translate data to other communications.

Other Requirements

  • Ability to occasionally work a flexible schedule beyond normal business hours, including some evening hours.

  • Background Screening - All candidates must pass a pre-employment background check. Must have a valid driver's license, up-to-date auto insurance, and a good driving record.
