Overview
This technician will act in the patient and physician liaison role, administer appropriate treatments and provide patient follow up care with the assistance of the EP RN and the electrophysiologists. This role has the combined responsibility of functioning at both the hospital and the clinic. Also responsible for EP data collection and surveillance.
Responsibilities
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Interrogate Pacemakers, Implantable Cardiac Defibrillators and Implantable Loop Records (and any such implantable cardiac devise as deemed appropriate by the Medical Director of Electrophysiology) both in outpatient Pacemaker/ICD Clinic as well as post-implant in the hospital and other such hospitalized patients and deemed appropriate by the Medical Director of Electrophysiology.
- For cardiac devised interrogated, record current settings and therapies delivered, determine battery life and reform capacitors. Print and interpret appropriate intracardiac electrograms. Recognize and correct common programming anomalies, device performance abnormalities, or routine reprogramming needs. Recognize and report to responsible physician any unusual patient arrhythmia occurrences.
- Maintain continuity of inpatient and outpatient Pacemaker/ICD records.
- Work with Electrophysiology Nurse in counseling patient and family regarding routine ICD follow-up, any restriction of activities, and when to report symptoms of trouble. Provide emotional support and attention to psychosocial issues of surviving sudden death and living with a defibrillator and be part of a support group.
- Work with Electrophysiology Nurse in serving as an informal liaison between physician and nurses to reinforce/reiterate ICD and Pacemaker issues regarding device function, patient expectations, and troubleshooting. Act as a source of information for other physicians regarding defibrillators, defibrillator patients, and other newer implantable cardiac devices.
- Work with EP nurse in arranging appropriate EP equipment, records, and company support. Help coordinate admission arrangements with the front office staff.
- Work with EP nurse in educating patients during the days to weeks that the patient is deciding whether to have an ablation or other complex Electrophysiology procedure.
- Work with EP nurse in managing Amiodarone screening clinic.
- Performs appropriate billing and coding for pacemaker and ICD interrogation and reprogramming.
- Works with cardiology Quality Assurance department in tracking and reporting patient outcomes data.
- Maintains appropriate supplies including, but not limited to, programmers, leads, paper, electrodes, chart material at office and hospital.
- Performs outreach pacemaker and ICD clinics in the referral region deemed appropriate by the Medical Director of Electrophysiology and Office Manager of Cardiology.

Education and Experience
Associates in Science degree with 3 years related clinical cardiology experience or High School diploma and 5 years clinical cardiology experience as a telemetry tech, exercise physiologist, kinesiologist or EKG. Preferred experience includes EKG Tech, CNA, Medical Assistant, or similar.
Certification and Licensure
Approved BLS certification required within 90 days (Other certification per unit requirements: ACLS, PALS, PEARS, NRP)

Skills and Abilities
Strong organizational skills, effective verbal and written communication, provides quality customer service, ability to read/comprehend written instructions, ability to follow verbal instructions, basic PC skills, medical terminology.
