Summary:

Since 2018, Access to Care team members have been co-located at the 22 Bramhall Campus alongside Financial Counseling staff to improve patient access by:

  • Engaging consumers at their initial visit
  • Screening for eligibility in programs, coverage, and SDOH needs
  • Utilizing Free Care as a last resort
This collaboration's success has expanded the Access to Care Program, which now includes: 3 Coverage Team staff 1 lead Coverage Case Manager, 1 part-time intern/receptionist, 1 on-site Program Manager

Our location enables close collaboration with Financial Counseling, HIM, New Mainer Coalition, and WIC, and partnerships with outpatient clinics at Bramhall. Together, we provide comprehensive support, addressing SDOH needs and connecting patients to local resources. Our team serves a diverse population: 65% New Mainers (recent arrivals to the U.S. or from other states), 35% other populations (locals and other transplants). Most team members are also New Mainers.

The Intern role provides administrative and project support within assigned department, while gaining valuable, hands-on experience in a healthcare environment.The intern in the Access to Care office at the Bramhall Patient Assistance Office will serve as the initial point of contact for consumers seeking assistance with insurance applications, medication coverage, medical bill payments, and medical records requests. This is a high-volume, consumer-facing office that serves a diverse population, including many individuals with limited English proficiency. The intern will collaborate frequently with Interpreter Services and must be able to manage a fast-paced environment with professionalism, patience, and cultural sensitivity.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Reception Duties: Welcome and check in consumers, answer general questions, manage phone calls, and direct individuals to appropriate staff, departments, or resources. Maintain an organized and professional reception area with relevant consumer materials.
  • Administrative Support: Provide assistance with data entry, updating consumer files, managing appointment schedules, preparing documentation, and supporting insurance and medication assistance processes. Help manage office inventory and ensure confidentiality standards are met.
  • Consumer Screening and Support: Conduct initial screenings to assess consumer needs and refer consumers to appropriate staff, departments, or community organizations for further assistance.

  • Prioritize tasks and manage a busy workload effectively
  • Stay calm and courteous under pressure
  • De-escalate individuals in distress
  • Communicate clearly and give directions confidently
  • Demonstrate patience, empathy, and attention to detail Work independently while maintaining focus on consumer service and office efficiency
  • Multilingual skills are preferred but not required

We welcome all undergraduate and graduate students to apply who are studying social work, public health, healthcare administration, human services, psychology, business, communications, or other relevant areas of study.
