Under the clinical direction of the Gastroenterology (GI) Division Ambulatory Nursing Manager and in collaboration with the supervising providers, the GI Triage Nurse will be responsible for the care of patients within MGH Gastroenterology.
We are looking for a RN with experience and knowledge of GI conditions who is familiar with working in a tertiary/academic hospital setting to join our fast-paced busy outpatient clinical practice. The RN will assist assigned physicians and advanced practice providers and work with their provider team to facilitate access to the clinic, return patient calls, process prior authorizations, respond to patient portal messages, provide patient teaching sessions, and work closely with the administrative staff in coordinating patient care.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Facilitates access for patients of the GI Clinic by filtering incoming records for appropriate patients. Will review patient charts and assist in obtaining information needed for an effective consultation with the GI specialist.
- Triage of patient concerns received through phone calls and Patient Gateway messages. Will gather information about relevant clinical signs and symptoms and makes accurate triage decisions regarding patients' care, in conjunction with the patient's provider.
- Will effectively and in a timely manner document nursing phone calls and chart review assessment, in the electronic medical record as appropriate.
- Coordinates closely with the medical assistant and patient service coordinator staff to provide top quality patient care.
- Provides Education sessions for patients and/or support persons regarding medical management of their disease including medication options, side effects, expected response, lab monitoring and when to contact providers.
- Provides self-injection teaching sessions with patients and/or support persons
- Assist Providers and Case managerin coordinating patient care, including facilitating care with local facilities, and communicating with community providers. Coordinates appropriate and timely scheduling of lab tests and follow-up assessments.
- Works to ensure prescriptions are refilled in a timely fashion; lab results are reviewed, and results disseminated to patients.
- Ensures that referrals to other specialists, radiological, endoscopic and laboratory testing are coordinated with patients and office staff.
- Assists with letters of medical necessity for prior authorizations, disability forms, and FMLA forms.
- Performs injections/ vaccinations as needed.
- Act as a resource regarding complex medications for patients and their families, including information regarding co-pay assistance programs, grants, and available community resources.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Valid Massachusetts RN licensure.
- Experience working in a tertiary/academic medical center preferred
- Experience working with patients with Inflammatory Bowel Diseases preferred
- Bi-lingual Fluent in Spanish preferred
- Excellent communication skills when working with peers and patients.
- Experience working with Epic care preferred.
- Experience with Microsoft Outlook, Office, Excel, and Teams

- Safety/Compliance: Knowledge in aspects of safety applicable to position; Knowledge of and compliance with institutional, JCAHO, HIPAA, and other regulatory bodies' standards.
- Time Management: Exceptional organizational skills and ability to organize time and priorities effectively, asking for direction when appropriate. Flexibility to handle multiple tasks and deadline pressures.
