Requisition Id15646 Overview: The Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) seeks to hire a Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) for the Health Services Division in the Environment, Safety, Health & Quality Directorate. The successful candidate will perform medical laboratory testing following established clinical procedures and in accordance with CLIA high-complexity testing and College of American Pathology (CAP) standards. Major Duties/Responsibilities:
- Assisting the clinic physician in making a medical diagnosis by accurately collecting and handling necessary specimens, performing and reporting all in-house laboratory testing according to procedures.
- Accurately collect and handle necessary specimens for referral laboratory testing, as required.
- Ensuring accurate lab testing by giving clear, precise instructions for patient collected specimens.
- Determining normal and abnormal components of body fluids by conducting chemical analyses of blood and urine
- Analyzing blood cells by counting and identifying cells, using microscopic techniques and procedures.
- Performing molecular diagnostic testing.
- Preparing reports of technological findings by collecting, analyzing, and summarizing information.
- Providing medical technology information by answering questions and requests.
- Ensuring operation of analyzers and other laboratory equipment by performing calibrating; performing quality control; completing routine maintenance requirements; following manufacturer's instructions; troubleshooting malfunctions; calling for repairs; maintaining equipment inventory; evaluating new equipment and techniques.
- Enhancing the efficiency and accuracy of lab testing by maintaining adequate laboratory supplies, by keeping equipment in operational condition and by maintaining a clean and orderly laboratory work area.
- Assisting in the preparation of monthly statistical reports by keeping accurate records on all radiographic and laboratory procedures performed.
- Maintaining quality assurance of the laboratory by performing proficiency testing.
- Perform ancillary testing, such as vision testing, audio testing, spirometry testing and EKGs.
- Ensuring accurate ancillary testing by giving clear, precise instructions to patients.
- Maintaining safe, secure, and healthy work environment by following, and enforcing standards and procedures and complying with legal regulations.
- Maintaining patient confidence and protecting operations by keeping patient care information confidential.
- Serving and protecting the physician or health care provider practice by adhering to professional standards, policies and procedures, federal, state, and local requirements.

Basic Qualifications:
- AS degree or higher in medical technology, clinical laboratory science, biology, chemistry, allied health technologies, or related medical field.
- A minimum offive years of related medical experience.
- American Medical Technologists (AMT) or ASCP Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) certification.
- Licensed by the State of Tennessee as a Medical Laboratory Professional, Medical Laboratory Technologist or Medical Laboratory Technician.
Preferred Qualifications:
- BS degree in medical technology, clinical laboratory science, biology, chemistry or allied health technologies is preferred.
- Specialization in areas such as hematology, blood-bank, immunoassays, chemistry or molecular.
- Experience with manual and automated PCR techniques.
- Knowledge of medical laboratory principles, standards, applications, and tests.
- Knowledge of medical laboratory safety, cleanliness and infection control policies and regulations.
- Knowledge of medical laboratory equipment uses and maintenance.
- Familiarity with digital record systems.
- Strong analytical and mathematical skills.
- Ability to perform work accurately and thoroughly.
- Exceptional attention to detail.
- Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
- Excellent interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work as part of a team and collaborate with co-workers.
- Phlebotomy experience.
- Limited X-ray license in chest and extremities.

- This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain an HSPD-12 PIV badge.
- For employment at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL), a Real ID compliant form of identification will be required.
