EQUIPMENT DISPATCHER I/C (In Charge)

DEPARTMENT OF STREETS & SANITATION

Bureau of Traffic Services

Number of Positions: 1

(Additional vacancies possible pending budget approval)

Salary: $51.29/hourly; Grade: PR

This position is covered under the City's collective bargaining agreement with THE TEAMSTERS Local 700 (BARGAINING UNIT 08). Only employees in City job titles in this bargaining unit are eligible to bid on this position.

Under general supervision, functions as a first line supervisor, supervising Equipment Dispatchers engaged in receiving and transmitting radio and telephone communications, and dispatching appropriate equipment and personnel.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES

  • Prioritizes and prepares work schedule and makes daily work assignments, ensuring shifts are adequately staffed; maintains time records for subordinate staff and approves time off
  • Monitors work performance, responds to performance issues and initiates and enforces disciplinary actions as required
  • Implements new and revised standard operating procedures and monitors work operations to improve efficiency of operations
  • Provides staff training on operating procedures and use of computerized equipment, radios and other systems
  • Assists Equipment Dispatchers in handling emergency situations and in the performance of assigned tasks as needed
  • Positions in the Department of Streets and Sanitation's City Incident Center (CIC) oversee Equipment Dispatchers engaged in monitoring, receiving and transmitting radio/telephone communications to facilitate the delivery of departmental services in support of city-wide emergencies.
  • Alerts management of potential extreme weather conditions or emergencies

Additional duties may be required for this position.

Hours: 10:00 pm - 06:00 am (days varies)

Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALFICATIONS

Two years of work experience as an Equipment Dispatcher for the City of Chicago, OR four years of work experience in operating radio and communications equipment in a communications or dispatch work environment.

SELECTION REQUIREMENTS

This position requires applicants to successfully pass a skills assessment test and complete an interview. Test results will be sent out by the Department of Human Resources after test results have been compiled and analyzed. Applicants who receive a passing score on the test will be selected to interview. The interviewed candidate(s) receiving a passing score on the test and possessing the qualifications best suited to fulfill the responsibilities of the position, based on the oral interview, will be selected for hire.
