Job Summary
#CA-PS Under the direction of the POWER & LIGHTS Superintendent, serves as a Foreman and is responsible for operating and maintaining high voltage distribution systems. Understands, interprets, and enforces University policies & procedures. Manages a staff of six and an annual state funded operation and maintenance budget of approximately $1 million. Responsible for the supervision of deferred maintenance and customer recharge projects totaling up to $800k per year. Responsible for the security and accounting of physical assets assigned to the high voltage distribution systems. Responsible for personnel actions, including hiring and discipline. Provide direct supervision to the high voltage crew as they perform a full range of duties required to be a journey-level high voltage electrician. Oversee all high voltage apprenticeship positions. - Certificate of completion of an electrical apprentice program. Preferably a high voltage electrical program.
- Required to hold a valid California driver's license, have a driving record that is in accordance with local policies/procedures, and/or enroll in the California Employer Pull Notice Program
- High school diploma and/or relevant experience/certifications.
- 2 years supervisory experience in the electrical trade, preferably medium to high voltage electrical industry.
- Knowledge of high-voltage maintenance, repair, and preventive practices, as well as the ability to ensure all work complies with applicable safety codes and regulations.
- Ability to plan and organize projects, including sketches, schedules, specifications, cost-control information, and related work-management tasks such as material procurement, record keeping, and database use.
- Skill in analyzing complex technical information and performing inspections and quality-control reviews for work in progress and at completion.
- Strong interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills, including customer service abilities to effectively interact with clients, management, regulators, contractors, and craft personnel and to follow through on inquiries and issues.
Preferred Qualifications
- Extensive knowledge of high voltage overhead, underground, switchgear and substation apparatuses.
- Skill to fabricate, maintain, service, repair, replace, install, and/or alter medium and high voltage electrical equipment and other campus systems related to craft.
- Demonstrated skills to effectively supervise, plan, schedule, direct, and work with skilled and apprentice workers.
- Skill in using testing equipment, and troubleshooting complex electrical problems and develop effective resolutions.
- Skill to review and interpret blueprints, specifications, and technical manuals, and relate it to the specifics of a particular situation.

Department Overview Utilities is responsible for providing mission-critical utility services to keep the UC Davis campus running in support of the campus Academic Plan and academic program needs. Utilities provides electricity, chilled water, steam, gas, water, wastewater treatment, and drainage to more than 1,600 buildings, totaling over 12 million gross square feet of campus space. Utilities has 80+ FTE and is responsible for $40+ million budget. The Utilities, High Voltage unit is responsible for maintenance, construction, repair, and operation of the medium and high voltage electrical systems, including transformers, isolation switches, circuit interrupters, reclosers, overhead and underground distribution facilities, and the high voltage substations.
