Job Overview:

The Senior Extrusion Engineer is responsible for owning/advancing our center for excellence in medical-grade thermoplastic extrusion. This role leads the design, optimization, and validation of medical tubing extrusion processes, from development (New product introduction) through full-scale production. This role combines hands-on process ownership with technical leadership-driving improvements in quality, yield, and throughput. Working closely with NPI, Quality, and Manufacturing teams, the engineer ensures serves as a key problem-solver and mentor, advancing both equipment capability and team skill while supporting new product introductions and continuous improvement initiatives.

Responsibilities:


  • Serves as the technical lead for melt extrusion processes used in medical device manufacturing, guiding the development, validation, and continuous improvement of extrusion operations.

  • Mentors and supports other engineers and technicians in every element of melt extrusion, from early product (e.g. process design, validation strategy) to day to day manufacturing support (e.g. setup, material handling, troubleshooting, best practices).

  • Communicates with prospective customers on project requirements, conveys timelines, and manages all elements of the project for new products.

  • Optimizes processes through structured experimentation (DOE), process characterization, and statistical analysis to achieve target performance and yield.

  • Partners with R&D, Quality, and Production to transfer new extrusion processes from development into stable production, maintaining clear documentation and process control.

  • Manages and executes equipment qualifications, preventive maintenance plans, and process control systems to ensure ongoing compliance and reliability.

  • Promotes collaboration, safety, and accountability across engineering and production teams, maintaining a culture focused on quality and operational excellence.

  • Oversees validation activities (IQ/OQ/PQ), including protocol creation, execution, and documentation.

  • Manage cross functional projects, creating, gathering support for, and adhering to approved project plans and ensuring on time completion of project milestones.

  • Conducts DOE studies, process characterization, and root-cause analysis to establish and maintain robust process windows.

Requirements:


  • Bachelor of Science in a related engineering field.

  • 5+ years of experience in an extrusion manufacturing environment, preferably in a medical or regulated setting.

  • Demonstrated experience in varied thermoplastic extrusion processes, including single- and multi-lumen tubing, taper, and co-extrusion applications.

  • Strong knowledge of material science, plastic chemistry, tooling, materials, and process controls.

  • Proven experience leading IQ/OQ/PQ and working to ISO 13485 / FDA 21 CFR 820.

  • Advanced skills in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Minitab (or other statistical analysis software).

Solidworks or CAD modeling software.
