OVERVIEW
Merrick & Company is looking for Temporary Junior Database Developer to join our team serving the Nuclear Services & Technology Business Unit. This person will design, build, and maintain small-to-medium scale data solutions using SQL and Microsoft Access. They will assist with database development, query optimization, report creation, and data quality checks while collaborating with business stakeholders and senior engineers to deliver reliable, well-documented data assets. Pay range for this position is $23.00-28.00 per hour. Base pay offered may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience.
WHAT YOU'LL DO
- Build and maintain Microsoft Access databases (tables, queries, forms, macros) to support business workflows.
- Create, optimize, and maintain SQL scripts (SELECT/INSERT/UPDATE/DELETE), views, stored queries, and parameterized reports.
- Implement relationships, keys, and validation rules to maintain data integrity.
- Import, transform, and export data using Access (queries, macros, VBA modules where appropriate).
- Assist in automating routine data tasks (scheduled imports, batch updates, data clean-up).
- Profile and optimize queries in Access and SQL (index usage, execution plans, normalization).
- Conduct data validation and reconciliation; investigate anomalies and propose fixes.
- Build Access reports and dashboards; design user-friendly forms for data entry.
- Collaborate with stakeholders to translate business requirements into data solutions and ad hoc queries.
- Write clear technical documentation (data dictionaries, etc.).
- Provide Tier-1/Tier-2 support for Access applications; troubleshoot user issues.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
- 1-2 years' work experience with SQL (joins, aggregations, subqueries, window functions basics).
- 1-2 years' Microsoft Access (tables, queries, forms, reports, macros; basic VBA is a plus).
- Understanding of relational database concepts (normalization, primary/foreign keys, referential integrity).
- Experience importing/exporting data (CSV/Excel), cleansing, and deduplication.
- Basic proficiency in Excel (lookups, pivot tables) for data validation and stakeholder handoffs.
- Strong attention to detail; organized and thorough with documentation.
- Clear written and verbal communication; ability to explain data concepts to non-technical users.
- Collaborative mindset; proactive in asking questions and seeking feedback.
- Client projects for this position require US Citizenship.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Experience with Access VBA for automations and custom logic.
- Exposure to SQL Server (SSMS, basic T-SQL, views/stored procedures) or other RDBMS (MySQL).
- Familiarity with ODBC connections and linking Access to external data sources.
- Basic understanding of ETL concepts and data warehousing fundamentals.
- Version control (Git) and task tracking tools (Azure DevOps, Jira).
- Introductory experience with Power BI for light reporting.
- Knowledge of data privacy/compliance (PII handling, access controls).
