Introduction to the job

ASML US brings together the most creative minds in science and technology to develop lithography machines that are key to producing faster, cheaper, more energy-efficient microchips. We design, develop, integrate, market and service these advanced machines, which enable our customers - the world's leading chipmakers - to reduce the size and increase the functionality of their microchips, which in turn leads to smaller, more powerful consumer electronics. Our headquarters are in Veldhoven, the Netherlands, and we have 18 office locations around the United States including main offices in Wilton, CT, Chandler, AZ, San Jose, CA and San Diego, CA.

Job Mission

We have an exciting opportunity for an experienced technical leader to join Source Research department in San Diego, focusing on conceiving and demonstrating the technologies required for next generations of high-power light sources. Our team has been at the forefront of innovating and developing next generation of light sources for ASML's lithography machines and products. To maintain our competitive edge and leadership position, we are seeking an experienced professional to define and advance our source technology roadmap.

The ideal candidate will excel in a multidisciplinary setting that integrates physics, engineering, model development, and cost analysis to shape next-generation source architecture. The successful candidate will demonstrate a passion for innovation, a curiosity-driven mindset, and deep technical expertise to excel in a research environment operating at the fuzzy front end of product development. This hybrid architect role combines strategic system architecture leadership with hands-on technical execution on the most critical challenges.

Role and responsibilities

  • Develop and maintain long term lithography source technology roadmap. Translate research from source innovation functions into system level architecture.

  • Drive system level trade off analysis such as performance, cost of technology, risk and scalability. Ensure technology roadmap is realistic and aligned with research business strategy.

  • Integrate learnings from source functions, align them with the department's learning goals, and identify gaps and opportunities critical for meeting source research objectives.

  • Provide technical leadership across functions within the department and guide the architecture team toward a unified, stable roadmap. Develop and deliver clear, impactful presentations to senior leadership.

  • Identify high impact technical cross-functional projects and lead hands-on experimentation, design, prototyping and analysis needed to mature technology.

  • Contribute to and influence the development of ongoing scientific models, cost models, AI and data solutions, and model validation needed to perform system level tradeoffs. Propose experimental anchoring studies, analyze test results and assess roadmap uncertainty to secure long term source technology roadmap.

  • Document learning and communicate knowledge to engineering and product development teams to guide product improvement and release of new product nodes.

  • Work independently and in teams to deliver on a stated objective, whether it be the pursuit of new knowledge, the demonstration of a new capability, or the characterization of existing performance.

  • Performs other duties as assigned or required.

Education and experience

  • Ph.D. with a minimum of 5 years of experience or a Master's degree with at least 8 years of experience in a relevant analytical discipline such as applied mathematics, artificial intelligence, physics, or engineering, with proven expertise in areas such as plasma, laser, and photonics.

  • Proven experience developing and maintaining multi-year technology roadmaps, aligning technical maturity, cost and integration readiness with business strategy.

  • Extensive hands-on experience in complex system design and construction, including experimentation, characterization, and troubleshooting. Proficient in software development using Python, C/C++ and MATLAB, with expertise in database tools and automation frameworks.

Skills

  • Ability to clearly and logically communicate ideas and knowledge to various audiences.

  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively as a part of a team and lead investigation and research efforts involving multiple stakeholders and constraints.

  • Proven ability to build trust and credibility, enabling effective leadership through influence.

  • The successful candidate will not only have excelled in their technical field, but will have demonstrated inter-personal and communications strengths.

  • Deep understanding of scientific research methods and strong curiosity.
