Join Our Team as a Materials Engineer Intern!

The Materials Engineer Intern is part of S&C's analytical services team, working in a Lean Processing System (LPS) environment. This role involves analyzing metallic, polymeric, and liquid samples from inspections and product divisions, ensuring they meet technical specifications, standards, and bulletins. The technologist handles routine and project-based work, document test results, and occasionally travel to suppliers and training sessions. Reporting to the manager, this position is crucial for maintaining the quality and integrity of our materials and processes.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Analyze incoming samples from new and existing products, incoming inspections, and products returning from the field. Ensure samples conform to technical specifications and standards.

  • Confirm heat treating and metal joining processes for new and existing products. Prepare samples for optical microscopy, thermal analysis, and chemical confirmation.

  • Operate laboratory instruments such as carbon/sulfur analyzers, X-ray systems, accelerated corrosion testing equipment, metallurgical mounting tools, microscopy, and scanning electron microscopes. Use mechanical testing equipment like Rockwell, Brinell, Knoop, and Vickers hardness testers.

  • Utilize tools like wet saws, drill presses, sanders, and potting apparatuses for sample preparation.

  • Conduct organic and inorganic chemical analyses using instruments such as XRF, ICP, DSC, FTIR, DMA, TGA, and TMA.

  • Create technical reports, develop procedures, and standardize work methods for peer and departmental review

  • Support departmental engineering and chemists in their projects.

  • Document standard procedures for testing and analysis. Contribute to departmental goals and participate in continuous improvement initiatives.

Understand and comply with all applicable Company policies and rules.

What you'll Need To Succeed:

Job Requirements ( To select this job at a minimum you must have the following):

  • Must be in good standing as a student at the Bachelor's degree level at an accredited university majoring in Chemistry, Metallurgy, Materials Sciences, or related field and returning to school full-time at the end of the internship.

  • Comfortable commuting and working onsite at S&C HQ in Rogers Park, Chicago, IL.

  • Ability to work Full-Time in Summer 2026.

Minimum Skills:

  • Good reporting skills, troubleshooting skills, and ability to plan and prioritize workloads.

  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

  • Good interpersonal skills with the ability to collaborate with diverse subject matter experts and stakeholders.

  • Good written and verbal communication skills with the ability to communicate effectively with supervisors and team members, adjusting communication approaches based on the audience.

  • Good organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously and meet deadlines.

  • Good attention to detail and ability to complete activities with accuracy.

  • Good critical thinking skills and an ability to identify potential issues and seek support for resolution.

  • Proficient in Microsoft Office products, including Outlook, Excel, and PowerPoint.

Preferred:

  • Experience using statistics software in a lab environment.

  • Experience in or knowledge of material science in manufacturing.
