Job Summary


Please note: primary work location will be Walnut Creek, but must be able to work in Oakland as needed. 4 days per week, 10 hours per day. Shift could start as early as 6:45 am or until 5:30 pm.

The Surgical Technologist assists in the preparation, processing, and maintenance of surgical supplies and equipment, and functions as a key member of the surgical team during operative procedures. In addition to all standard Surgical Technologist responsibilities, the Senior Surgical Technologist serves as a specialty resource-utilizing, troubleshooting, and supporting specialty service equipment and acting as a knowledgeable resource for other Surgical Technologists.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Selects and sets up instruments and equipment required for each surgical procedure.

  • Functions as an integral member of the interdisciplinary and nursing teams.

  • Carries out established procedures and performs related duties as required.

  • Passes instruments and sterile supplies to the surgeon throughout the operation.

  • Maintains a sterile environment for the duration of the surgery.

  • Demonstrates flexibility to orient and work at all UCSF Medical Center locations as needed.

Department Description

The UCSF Benioff Children's Hospital Oakland (OR) consists of 11 surgical suites and 1 procedural. Walnut Creek (OR) has two surgical suites and one special procedure room.

Our primary focus is multidisciplinary team-based approach and staffing.
Services include, but are not limited to: Neurology, Ortho/Spine, Otolaryngology, Urology, Plastics, Ophthalmology, Dental, Cardiac, General Surgery, GI, Hem/Onc.

Required Qualifications


  • This position requires flexibility to orient and work at all UCSF Medical Center locations.

  • Minimum two years of recent scrubbing clinical experience in an acute care operating room setting.

  • Recent experience (within the last two years) scrubbing in at least three of the following service lines: General Surgery, Ophthalmology, Neurology, Orthopedics/Spine, Otolaryngology/Airway, Plastics, Cardiac (Oakland only).

  • Demonstrated proficiency in at least two of the surgical specialties listed above.

  • Current American Heart Association (AHA) CPR for Healthcare Providers certification.

  • High School Diploma.

  • Graduate of a surgical technologist training program or equivalent experience.

Preferred Qualifications


  • Certification as a Surgical Technologist.

  • Scrub experience in General Surgery, Ophthalmology, OHNS, Orthopedics/Spine, Neurology, or Cardiac procedures.

  • Pediatric experience desired.
