Currently recruiting a Orthopedic Technician to provide care to active-duty military members and their families at Malcom Grow Medical Clinics and Surgery Center, Joint Base Andrews, Maryland. The Orthopedic Technician is a full-time position, 80 hours per two weeks, M-F, 0730 - 1630. Full benefits, including 17 days paid vacation/sick leave and 11 paid Federal holidays.

DUTIES OF THE ORTHOPEDIC TECHNICIAN:
  • Assists physicians and Physician assistants (PA) with patient care;properly fits and applies pre-operative braces, crutches, and other soft goods;assists in preparation for and application of casts and orthopedic appliances;changes dressings;removes sutures, casts, and splints.
  • Assists physicians, PAs, and nurses with orthopedic procedures, including wound care, aspirations, minor surgical procedures, fracture reductions, etc;instructs patients in cast and traction care and the use of orthopedic appliances.
  • Familiarity with casting/splinting, instrument sets used during orthopedic surgery, radiographic units, orthopedic traction equipment used for orthopedic related procedures, preparing patients for surgery and assisting orthopedic surgeon during procedures and basic knowledge of central sterile supply procedures.
  • Maintains clean and well-stocked cast and soft goods room;clean and maintain patient rooms, including restocking supplies and necessary forms/documents, removing sharps containers, ordering equipment/supplies, and medications
  • Perform the full spectrum of sterile techniques, setting up surgical trays, preparing and draping patients for surgery and assisting with post-operative dressings
  • Ensure surgical packs are cleaned and packed for sterilization after every procedure, to include restocking surgical supplies.
  • Prepare examination rooms prior to patient's arrival.
  • Assist with patient check-ins, admissions, discharges, and transfers as directed.
  • Check patient's vital signs, to include temperature, respiration, pulse, weight and blood pressure.
  • Obtain and document patient's current medical history, drug history, chief complaints, allergies and vital signs on the correct form.
  • Maintain examination room stock levels and perform routine maintenance of examination rooms
  • Enter demographic data into the computer upon patient check-in, enter diagnosis and departing time when patient is released.
  • Perform administrative duties in support of the clinic: pre-screen clinics, determining if any pre-visit imaging is needed, ordering imaging and contacting patients to come in early to have it completed, reviewing prior electronic medical records prior to patient visits, input profiles into patient databases, compose necessary correspondence, such as memos, doctor s notes, orient and train new clinic staff
  • Complete lab and x-ray requisitions in accordance with clinic policies.
  • Cover the clinic front desk on an as needed basis: answer telephone and take messages, schedule appointments, scan documents into electronic medical record, fax documents to off base clinics
  • Remains current with orthopedic trends, care and supplies;performs other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS OF THE ORTHOPEDIC TECHNICIAN:
  • Certificates: None
  • Education: High school diploma or equivalent with additional training or education;supplemented with one (1) year of related experience in an accredited health care hospital/clinic which results in familiarity with and knowledge of hospital or clinic routines and procedures in orthopedics. Must have knowledge of fundamentals of anatomy and physiology;principles of asepsis and sterile techniques.
  • Experience: Minimum of One (1) year of related experience in an accredited health care hospital. The Orthopedic Technician must have at least 12 months experience within the past 24 months.
  • US Citizenship required (for access to government computer systems).
  • BLS for Healthcare Providers
