Major Duties

Classification: Exempt, Non-Bargaining

The System Administrator (EMS) is responsible for maintaining, administering, configuring, and upgrading Element Management Systems (EMS) used for network management and monitoring in a telecommunications or service provider environment. This individual ensures the stability, security, and performance of EMS platforms that interface with network elements and fault management systems.

The ideal candidate possesses deep UNIX/Linux system administration skills, extensive scripting experience, and a strong understanding of SNMP, fault management, and network monitoring concepts.

Responsibilities

  • Administer, maintain, and upgrade EMS platforms across multiple network domains (e.g., transport, access, IP, and optical).
  • Perform installation, configuration, and patch management on UNIX/Linux servers supporting EMS applications.
  • Manage and monitor system performance, ensuring high availability and reliability of EMS applications.
  • Develop and maintain automation scripts using Bash, Python, and Perl to streamline operational tasks and integrations.
  • Troubleshoot EMS application and OS-level issues, working closely with network engineers and application vendors.
  • Integrate EMS systems with fault management platforms (e.g., Unified Assurance, Netcool, SolarWinds, or equivalent).
  • Utilize SNMP for network element discovery, polling, and alarm collection.
  • Implement backup and recovery strategies for EMS configurations and databases.
  • Maintain system documentation, configuration baselines, and standard operating procedures (SOPs).
  • Collaborate with network operations and architecture teams to support new technology rollouts and system migrations.
  • Ensure EMS systems comply with corporate security, audit, and change management policies.
Qualifications

  • 5+ years of experience in UNIX/Linux system administration (RHEL, CentOS, or similar).
  • Proficiency in Bash, Python, and Perl scripting for automation and troubleshooting.
  • Strong working knowledge of SNMP, including MIBs, OIDs, and trap handling.
  • Experience with fault management systems or event correlation platforms.
  • Familiarity with network monitoring tools and protocols (e.g., syslog, ICMP, SNMP traps, REST APIs).
  • Ability to analyze logs, troubleshoot performance issues, and manage large-scale distributed systems.
  • Solid understanding of network architectures (LAN/WAN, routers, switches, firewalls, optical transport).
  • Proven experience maintaining and upgrading vendor-provided EMS applications.
  • Excellent documentation and communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Background in telecommunications or service provider environments.
  • Experience with Unified Assurance, Netcool/OMNIbus, Resolve, or GrokStream.
  • Knowledge of database administration (MySQL, Oracle) for EMS backend support.
  • Familiarity with Kafka, RESTful APIs, and event-driven architectures.
  • Experience with containerized deployments (Docker, Kubernetes, Helm).
  • Understanding of ITIL processes and change control in production environments.

Education:

Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Telecommunications, or a related field, or equivalent work experience

Salary

Pay range (commensurate with skills and experience): $69,323 - $105,074

Other Information

  • May require participation in on-call rotation for production support.
