POSITION SUMMARYAs an Engineering Director at Breakthrough, you will play a pivotal role in leading and managing one or more talented teams of engineers to deliver high-quality products and solutions. Responsible for overseeing day-to-day operations, you will be contributing to the overall technical strategy of the organization. This role includes the crucial responsibility of managing and maintaining all systems owned by the teams you manage.
The location for this role will be in Green Bay, WI or within a commutable distance for on-site time as needed.
JOB RESPONSIBILITIES
Team Leadership:
- Lead and inspire one or more teams of engineers, fostering a positive and collaborative work environment.
- Mentor and develop team members, encouraging continuous learning and professional growth.
- Cultivate a culture of accountability, innovation, and excellence within the engineering team that embodies Breakthrough's values.
- Provide ongoing support and feedback utilizing in the moment coaching in addition to annual evaluations, goal setting, and professional development plans.
Execution Leadership:
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to define product scope, objectives, and requirements.
- Ensure timely and cost-effective product development.
- Maintain a clear understanding and management of timelines, scope, and budget.
- Ensure your team delivers extraordinary output, and continuously seeks ways to make an impact.
- Lead the development of a comprehensive engineering roadmap, outlining key milestones and initiatives.
Technical Excellence:
- Contribute to the technical vision and strategy of Breakthrough.
- Stay current with industry trends, emerging technologies, and best practices.
- Drive the adoption of efficient and effective engineering processes and methodologies.
- Define and track key performance indicators (KPIs) to measure the success and efficiency of engineering projects.
System Ownership:
- Hold responsibility for the systems owned by the engineering team.
- Uphold the stability, scalability, and security of the systems under your purview.
- Assist team in monitoring and support for all areas of the system to ensure reliability meets business and technical service agreements.
Communication and Collaboration:
- Foster effective communication within the engineering team and across other departments.
- Regularly update Breakthrough's leadership on product and system status, risks, and opportunities.
- Engage with key stakeholders, including executives, product leads, and other department heads, to understand their needs and align engineering efforts accordingly.
- Lead initiatives for continual process improvement within the engineering department, identifying areas for optimization and implementing best practices.

QUALIFICATIONS
Bachelor's degree in computer science or other highly technical scientific discipline or equivalent combination of education, training, and experience. 10+ years of progressive experience in software engineering, including 5+ years in engineering leadership roles. Proven ability to lead and scale high-performing engineering teams in a product-focused environment. Strong foundational understanding of modern software development practices, architectures, and infrastructure. Demonstrated depth in one or more core technical areas (e.g., Python, SQL, cloud platforms, or frontend frameworks), with broad familiarity across others. Working knowledge of application architectures, security best practices, and data integration concepts. Familiarity with data platforms, distributed systems, and cloud-native infrastructure. Demonstrated ability to set technical vision, drive architectural decisions, and ensure alignment with business goals. Strong problem-solving and troubleshooting skills, with the ability to analyze complex issues and propose effective solutions. Skilled in identifying performance bottlenecks, fostering innovation, and driving continuous improvement. Effective communicator with a track record of mentoring engineers and building team engagement. Experience with Agile methodologies and iterative delivery practices.
Preferred:
Experience leading the development of scalable, high-performance systems. Prior success in building and evolving engineering organizations and technical roadmaps. Passion for developing talent and supporting career growth across distributed teams.
