What to Expect
We are looking for an Optical Systems Engineer to join the Vision Hardware Engineering team. The candidate will manage a diverse set of responsibilities including the development and ownership of optical models from first principles. The candidate will characterize materials such as glass, coatings, camera components, create corresponding optical models and use them in optical simulations such as ray tracing. The candidate will also guide specifications and standards for materials, lab characterization tools and methods, and camera image quality based on scientific considerations such as radiometry and photometry.
What You'll Do
- Characterize optical materials and build optical models for ray tracing
- Work cross functionally to integrate the models in simulation pipelines and guide lab instrumentation and methods
- Document the characterization and models
- Define and maintain specifications and standardize material and camera characterization methods
- Drive suppliers to develop new materials and meet the desired specifications
What You'll Bring
- Strong knowledge of optics including mastery of the Maxwell's equations in dielectric media, ray optics, wave optics, photometry, radiometry, color science
- Knowledge of imaging optics or material science is a plus
- Solid basis in mathematics including: mastery of linear algebra in arbitrary dimension, mastery of the Fourier transform, probabilities and statistics, basic knowledge of partial differential equations
- Strong coding experience in MATLAB and/or Python
- Experience with optical material characterization methods such as spectrophotometry, ellipsometry, radiometry, color calculations
- Strong technical leadership skills, ability to drive vendors and a go-getter attitude where anything that does not violate physics is possible
- Strong communication and presentation skills (written and verbal)
