Job Summary


The anticipated duration of this assignment is 3 months.

Join a thriving community cancer practice within UCSF Health as a Medical Assistant supporting both clinic and infusion areas. Under the supervision of the Administrative Nurse and in collaboration with the Clinical Nursing Staff, you will assist in the delivery of high-quality, compassionate care to patients across multiple Cancer Center ambulatory practices. This position supports the Cancer Services, Ambulatory Services, and Infusion Unit, performing a variety of clinical and administrative functions to ensure positive patient outcomes.

Key Responsibilities:

Clinical Support

  • Collect, validate, and document patient information and vital signs.
  • Follow established safety, environmental, and infection control standards.
  • Prepare patients for exams, procedures, and treatments.
  • Assist with sterile processing, specimen collection, and point-of-care testing (e.g., AccuChek, EKGs).
  • Support nurses and providers in procedures such as laser treatments, TRUS, colposcopy, anoscopy, and IRC.
  • Maintain logs (temperature, crash cart, disaster cabinet, etc.) and ensure exam rooms and supplies are fully stocked.
  • Perform medication reconciliation and assist with obtaining insurance authorizations.
  • Float across Cancer Center Adult Infusion Services as needed.

Patient Care Coordination

  • Collaborate with providers, nurses, and front office staff to ensure smooth patient flow and timely communication.
  • Maintain professionalism in all patient and telephone interactions in line with UCSF's "Living PRIDE" standards.
  • Enter patient data and documentation into the Electronic Health Record (EPIC/APeX).
  • Schedule labs, imaging, and other diagnostic testing as ordered by providers.
  • Support patient satisfaction by managing delays, providing updates, and assisting with care concerns.

Operations & Maintenance

  • Maintain clean and organized exam and procedure rooms.
  • Order and restock supplies and equipment as needed.
  • Manage biohazard and chemotherapy waste disposal.
  • Participate in quality improvement and customer service initiatives.

Department Description

UCSF's Temporary Employment Program (TEP) recruits and hires temporary employees for immediate clerical and technical support services to UCSF Departments and various off-campus locations. UCSF departments deploy temporary employees to work on special projects, fill in for regular employees who are on vacation or leave, or to temporarily fill a vacant position during recruitment. Frequently temporary employees become successful candidates for career and limited appointment positions.

Required Qualifications


  • Flexibility to orient and work at all UCSF Health locations.
  • Must meet one of the following:
    • Certificate of training or graduation from an accredited Medical Assistant, CNA, HHA, PCA, dental, or paramedic program or college degree in a related field (community health, infectious disease, public health, or health education) and at least 6 months of relevant experience.
    • OR 2 years of relevant experience as a Medical Assistant in a hospital or medical practice.
  • Strong communication skills and ability to interact effectively with patients and staff.
  • Must meet physical requirements of the role.
  • Current American Heart Association CPR certification.

Preferred Qualifications


  • Prior experience in an oncology or infusion setting.
  • Experience with insurance verification, medical record abstraction, or patient financial services.
  • Degree from an accredited Medical Assistant program.
  • Bilingual or multilingual ability (Spanish, Cantonese, or Russian preferred).
  • Current State of California Phlebotomy Certification (CPT1).

License/Certification


  • Current American Heart Association CPR Certification
