Job Summary

The Senior Accountant is responsible for analyzing financial information and performing a variety of accounting duties associated with the timely and accurate preparation and reporting of sponsored project data, in accordance with applicable accounting, industry, regulatory and institutional principles and policies. The Senior Accountant will assist the Research Accounting Services Assistant Director with staff supervision.

Essential Functions



  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of federal, state, local and private sponsor regulations and policies and routinely provide guidance to investigators and Departmental Administrators.
  • Monitor and reconcile facilities and administrative rate charges and fringe benefit charges on sponsored project funds.
  • Review and approve cost transfers/journal entries submitted by the research community through the Journal Entry Workflow application.
  • Monitor budget variances and determine sponsor approval from terms and conditions of the award. Maintain the required financial records for each award.
  • Communicate with internal and external contacts to ensure accuracy of post-award support for grant administration. Communicate with sponsors and subcontractors regarding contract and/or budget modifications.
  • Operate as a functional liaison in support and to ensure accurate and timely processing of financial data with individual faculty, principal investigators, departmental administrators, and others integral to effective management of externally sponsored awards.
  • Reconcile sponsored project fund accounts as assigned. Enter transactions into the ledger accurately and timely. Analyze and audit transactions and fund account statements for accuracy. Identify fund accounting corrections. Respond to departmental inquires connected with budgets and expenditures. Assist in preparing year-end and interim reports. Run daily reports and identify and discrepancies and take action to rectify them.
  • Assist the Research Accounting Services Assistant Director with supervision of Research Accountants. Assist with drafting of new sponsored project policies and procedures. Provide direction and training to other departmental and University staff on proper sponsored project accounting policies and procedures. Develop and present training sessions for the University community. Performs required research and analysis on special projects as assigned. Responsible for accurate and timely financial and statistical reporting.


Required Qualifications



  • Minimum of a Bachelor's Degree in Business or the equivalent combination of education and work experience. (Please review the Equivalency Chart for additional information.)
  • Minimum of 4 years of relevant accounting experience
  • Demonstrates ability to use Microsoft Windows and Office 365 software (Office, Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint and Teams)
  • Demonstrates proficiency with Banner Finance, COEUS Lite, COEUS Premium, OnBase Oracle Analytic Service, and Banner WebFinance
  • Demonstrates strong verbal, written, and interpersonal skills


Preferred Qualifications



  • Bachelor's Degree in Business (Accounting preferred) or 5 plus years of Research Accounting experience in higher education
  • Supervisory experience preferred
  • Thorough understanding of institutional, state and federal Office of Management and Budget regulations
  • Possesses organizational and qualitative skills with close attention to detail and accuracy
  • Ability to prioritize and complete multiple tasks concurrently and meet tight deadlines
  • Ability to effectively communicate financial information

This position is classified as Exempt, grade L. Compensation for this grade ranges from $ 62,630.00 to $ 93,950.00 per year. Please note that the offered rate for this position typically aligns with the minimum to midrange of this grade, but it can vary based on the successful candidate's qualifications and experience, department budget, and an internal equity review.
