Job Summary

The Department of Microbiology and Immunology is recruiting a per diem computer programmer

Essential Functions

  • The Center for Genomic Sciences (CGS), a Research Center of Excellence within the Institute for Molecular Medicine and Infectious Disease routinely performs mid-to-large scale comparative bacterial genomic studies both for basic and translational research projects. Two such studies have been published in 2025 in high-profile journals one of which also led to a Drexel patent application currently under active efforts to commercialize. There are an additional three more high-impact studies that are in the final stages of the pipeline for journal submission that are being held up due to need for compute infrastruction. To finish these studies and for all other such studies (many of which are in various stages of completion by graduate students) requires a rebuild of the CGS informatic infrastructure. This is due to the recent catastrophic failure of the CGS's in-house computer cluster at New College Building resulting in the transfer of all data storage and informatic work to the UCRF on main campus. In order to rebuild our informatic pipelines to function in this new compute environment which will allow the CGS faculty, and more importantly the graduate students who are in the midst of their educations, the CGS needs to hire a bioinformatic computer programmer as we do not have any software programmers currently to take on these tasks. This is because during last year's retrenchments all three full-time computer scientists within the CGS were let go. The best, fastest, and least expensive solution to the current emergent issue is to hire someone who knows the system that was operational on the NCB compute cluster prior to its recent failure to reconfigure the pipelines to function within the UCRF/Picotte environment. - (Essential)
