Job Description Summary:

Performs routine and complex laboratory analyses and preventative maintenance within the Institute for Genomic Medicine, contributing to enhanced quality control and operational improvement functions. Troubleshoots, assesses technologist competency, and contributes to validation projects.

Job Description:

Essential Functions:

  • Performs routine and complex technical procedures and serves as a technical resource for others in the lab.
  • Applies thorough knowledge of laws and regulations to assist in maintaining a safe working environment.
  • Assists with scheduling and operational flow of samples.
  • Provides instruction of technical operations in absence of supervisor and assesses competency for other lab technologists.
  • Contributes to writing standard operating procedures, quality control documents, and maintaining proper lab documentation.
  • Serves as Lab Supervisor as defined by New York State testing guidelines and as General Supervisor per CAP/CLIA guidelines.

Education Requirement:

Bachelor's degree in a chemical, biological, clinical or medical laboratory science, or medical technology from an accredited institution, or Bachelor's degree equivalent education as defined in the Code of Federal Regulations: 42CFR493.1405(b)(5)(i)(B).

Certifications:

  • American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) certified as an MT(ASCP), MB(ASCP) or CG(ASCP), required.
  • Certification exam must be completed within 2 years of start date and maintained throughout employment.

Skills:

  • Exceptional organizational skills, attention to detail, and communication skills.
  • Advanced technical, computer, trouble-shooting, and critical thinking skills necessary for high-complexity laboratory analysis.
  • Ability to maintain and foster interpersonal relationships with internal and external customers.
  • Works efficiently both independently and on a team.
  • Flexibility with interruptions and changing circumstances

Experience:

Six years of laboratory experience in molecular cytogenetics, molecular genetics, or molecular biology, required.
