Department Summary

The Department of Family and Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine is a multifaceted, interdisciplinary team of dedicated healthcare providers and researchers who are committed to providing excellence in clinical care, primary care education, and research. Through innovative curricular designs, early clinical experiences, and mentorship, the Department is focused on producing highly competent, caring, and compassionate Family Medicine/OMM physicians, helping reduce the shortage of primary care physicians in our Texas communities.

Position Overview

The Research Assistant Director supports the planning, coordination, and oversight of research-related activities within the ROME program. This role is responsible for facilitating research operations, managing programmatic initiatives, mentoring students or junior staff, and ensuring compliance with institutional and regulatory guidelines. The Assistant Director contributes to strategic planning, supports grant and proposal development, oversees data collection and analysis, and collaborates with internal and external stakeholders to advance the unit's mission.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree and five (5) years of experience in quality management; or any equivalent combination of education and experience.

Job Duties



  • Direct research projects and scholarly activity for the Office of Rural Medical Education.
  • Preparing documents for IRB review, maintaining research files, and advising research team members and students on human subjects and other research project management issues.
  • Participates in the recording and analysis of data related to research projects in the Office of Rural Medical Education.
  • Prepares manuscripts, research reports, posters, presentations and other scholarly literature and material related to the Office of Rural Medical Education.
  • Assists the Assistant Dean of Rural Medical Education in the development, preparation and publication of research related to rural medical education.
  • Acts as advisor and evaluator for Community Health Research Projects required of Rural Scholar students.
  • Direct the evaluation of all educational programs of the Office of Rural Medical Education.
  • Develops and manages an evaluation system that captures relevant data for all programs within the Office of Rural Medical Education.
  • Participate in collaborative efforts with other UNTHSC units in developing interprofessional program and research opportunities: Assists in the development and maintenance of academic programs and research initiatives in collaboration with other schools and programs within the UNTHSC, such as the School of Public Health.
  • Direct the preparation, submission and implementation of grants.
  • Writes and submits grant proposals to relevant funding organizations, together with the Assistant Dean of Rural Medicine, to develop and expand programs in the Office of Rural Medical Education.
  • Writes and submits grant proposals together with the Assistant Dean of Rural Medicine to develop and implement research projects related to rural health.
  • Manages existing grants with assistance of assigned project coordinators. Coordinates the implementation of grant activities and works together with the Office of Grants and Contracts Management to ensure post award compliance.
