Job Description

General Summary:

Are you an accounting or finance professional who is passionate about process innovation, optimization and supporting positive business outcomes? Vertex is seeking a hands-on, experienced leader with deep process optimization expertise to join our Global Accounting organization. The Senior Director, Record-to-Report (R2R) Strategy & Optimization will be accountable to set the strategy and roadmap for our R2R process improvement journey, for measuring our performance and ensuring related stakeholder needs and enterprise goals are consistently met. This newly established role is ideal for a motivated leader who can contribute to our strategic direction, effectively align diverse stakeholders, foster collaboration, and deliver innovative solutions to advance Vertex's accounting and reporting processes.

Key Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Support the Company's baselining of current state R2R process, including process maturity, current stakeholder sentiment, and develop key metrics to assess performance.
  • Identify and implement standardization and simplification opportunities to reduce unnecessary complexity in the R2R process while maintaining strong internal controls.
  • Recommend and implement process improvements, utilizing technology and automation to streamline R2R efficiency and effectiveness.
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with Accounting, Finance, Investor Relations, IT, Legal, Treasury, and Tax to align functional goals and objectives for R2R delivery and improvement imperatives.
  • Design, oversee and monitor the execution of a portfolio of R2R projects, with near-term focus on optimizing and accelerating our accounting close and external reporting processes.
  • Manage external vendors to ensure successful delivery of R2R initiatives.
  • Explore the art of the possible with emerging technology and tools, and prepare business cases to secure support and funding for value-added improvement projects.
  • Communicate roadmap and vision for R2R process excellence to stakeholders across the enterprise. * Set and achieve annual continuous improvement targets and support functional leaders in policy and strategy development.
  • Own global R2R process quality, simplicity, and accelerated close/reporting outcomes to drive stakeholder satisfaction.

Knowledge and Skills:

  • Deep expertise in RTR processes, accounting, finance, and enabling technologies.
  • Proven success in RTR optimization, including process documentation, performance metrics, stakeholder engagement, and change management.
  • Strong business acumen and understanding of best practices in RTR across industries.
  • Innovation mindset with a focus on emerging technologies and continuous improvement.
  • Excellent project management and leadership skills in matrixed environments.
  • Ability to build business cases and influence senior leaders to secure funding.
  • Strong communication and relationship-building skills with senior stakeholders.
  • Experience working with solution teams (e.g., PMO, RPA, CI) to drive improvement initiatives.
  • Demonstrated agility in leading through change and ambiguity.
  • Experience shaping global RTR policy and standardizing procedures across geographies and systems.
  • Strong understanding of internal controls and compliance requirements.

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Business, or related field required.
  • MBA, MSA, or equivalent advanced degree preferred.
  • Typically requires 12+ years of experience in finance or accounting within large, complex organizations.
  • Big 4 and life sciences industry experience strongly preferred.
  • CPA or equivalent certification preferred.
  • Demonstrated success in leading process transformation initiatives in accounting or finance.

Other Requirements:

  • Stakeholder interactions will largely be in Boston, MA or virtual with international colleagues
  • Optional travel opportunities may exist to meet other regional stakeholders and oversee implementations impacting other regions (e.g. London where certain RTR team members reside) or domestically for industry conferences

The range provided is based on what we believe is a reasonable estimate for the base salary pay range for this job at the time of posting. This role is eligible for an annual bonus and annual equity awards. Some roles may also be eligible for overtime pay, in accordance with federal and state requirements. Actual base salary pay will be based on a number of factors, including skills, competencies, experience, and other job-related factors permitted by law.
